Just replaced the Quantum with a non digital ballast (XTRASUN) and no problems so far. I have an old school ballasts from 2000 that is still running with no problems. New digital ballasts are shit! They are covered in wax or plastic so you cant even change the capacitor for 20 bucks.

Thanks +rep Newer ballasts are not designed to handle dirty power as they rely on sensitive electronics instead of capacitor and relay based which deal with dirty power quite well. dont count out the quantums or digial ballasts as they ARE more efficient and much better in the long run... The epoxy resin is used to keep the board "CLEAN" and protect them from moisture, unfortunately old ballasts deteoriate MUCH faster than the newer ones..

The best ballet in my opinion is the phantom digital ballet led light display. I have had a lumatek they do suck. Check it out the best ballet out there

Epoxy resin, thank you. Let me correct myself. I like the quantums because of their light weight and easy heat but they are sensitive. I'm not an electrician, nor do I play one on the internet but I have a constant hot outlet that was blowing them every night. Threw in a non digital ballast, and NO problems. Thanks for your help pr0fesseur!

interesting thread...but...I'm still not sure which ballast to go with :) Can you even purchase the magnetic ones now? Everything I see is electronic/digital.

lumatek just sucks. i have quantums and phantoms. you can run the quantum at 50%,75%, and 100%. The phantom can be set at 60%, 75%, and 100%. thats the only difference for me.

Poor Junkie how do the slois tek stay cool with no fans??I'm down for getting one becuz my quatum fan although it isnt that loud u can still hear it sometimes with door shut on closet where it is...

Like i said , i run the SOLISTEK and the QUANTUM side by side, and they run at the SAME TEMPERATURE!

the solistek ballast stays cool because of the design of the shell, it is acting like a heatsink to dissapate the heat kind of like the processor in your computer. The twin peak design is alot more efficient than the lumateks too, even the lumateks now offer a fan for the 1000w ballast...

go with solistek, proven success.
they are a solid new ballast company thats for sure.

hey i just got a solis-tek 1000w dimmable(the only one they have) and i have a few questions for poorjunkie or anyone that has ran them. (i only run 600w ATM)

1. do they make any noise at the ballast, are they silent??? mine sounds almost like a damn cap and core!

2. do you have any issues with it flickering bulbs? if so what types/brands work or dont?

3. how warm do they run? i have never run a quantum or any fan cooled 1000w ballast so i dunno how warm that is but i have a cheap power king 600w (thats silent and burns all my bulbs without issue) with no fan hardly any cooling fins and my solis tek runs as warm or warmer and this is only at 600w.

ive contacted solis-tek on the issue and they wanted to replace right away until they found out im in canada!?!?! then they asked where i bought it from now im waiting to here whats gonna happen...

ive also contacted growwurks a few days ago when i first contacted solis-tek, where i bought the item and they have not yet replied.

not soo impressed after that email. its probly gonna take a while to resolve and thats not good at all...

UPDATE: after i sent some vids to them they decided to replace the ballast also stating that the ballast will make some noise, especially right after ignition, but i hope they are not as noisy or as picky with bulbs as my particular unit. solis-tek has emailed a prepaid standard shipping label to right the issue. they were very nice to deal with! and if this next ballast performs better i will buy my next units from them as well, if not i think i may still check out there solis-max hoods as they are kick ass hoods and they have very good customer service.

so thats my experience with solis-tek so far, ill keep you posted when the new unit arrives. take care!

I like quantum better...... The reason there lighter is because they have much smaller Heat sinks on them they use a small fan to cool the ballast thus not needing the extra thick heat sink on outside...... Lumitek dosent use fan instead they opt for the bigger heat sink thus more heavy....... Some people say that with no fan and bigger heat sink you get less to go wrong....On a quantum if fan goes ballast goes but there is no fan on lumitek so thats one less thing to break....

Me persoanlly i dont care i still prefer the quantum because they do run cooler and they are lighter and i prefer to mount my ballasts vertical on the celling of my grow room and quatums are PERFECT for that......I use all kinds of different bulbs never had a problem with any of the brands...... right now there is 1000w 240/120 dimmable quantums on ebay NEW for $160.00..... at my work we sale them for like 280.00

i dunno if this will change anyone's mind but does your ballast do this..... :

also torch to answer your question, my solistek ballasts run pretty cool, i run on 240V tho, if running on 120v, it tends to get hotter. the noise... its pretty quiet, i cant cant really hear anything from it.

Hey I just got one of these ballasts also. When I first got home I fired it in a separate silent room with a Yield Master II Supreme hood & cord set (15 ft) and a Hortilux 1000w HPS and immediately thought something was wrong with it. It sounded nearly as loud as 250w or so magenetic ballast and it just sounded bad. So I prompty returned to the store where I purchased it for further testing. We hooked up a 1000w Hortilux bulb (different one then mine) with a socket and 1 foot cord. Now it seemed much quieter, granted the store had a much louder ambient background noise. I was stumped, the display model on the wall was running a 600w MH conversion bulb and was DEAD silent, I mean no hum, nadda, couldn't even tell it was on beside slight warmth. So for further testing, we took the same 1000w Hortilux bulb and 1 foot cord setup and ran another new Solis Tek 1000w ballast from the box, this one made what we determined to be equal noise as my original. I left the store with my original ballast somewhat stumped, and I guess my expectations were just too high? I don't mind slight noise, but these are typically advertised as silent, just want to be safe.

I don't have any flickering bulb issues personally. I only observed that the 1000w Hortilux bulbs (digital compatible ones) made a medium high pitched ringing sound while the ballast was soft-warming the blub. One the bulb reached peak light output (2-3 min) the ringing vanishes. This was observed with 2 different bulbs and 2 different Solis Tek 1000w ballasts.

Mine runs pretty cool, even in a warm room I would say it's a cool as a 400w magnetic, maybe even cooler. In a cool room (~70 ambient) it barely feels warm to the touch.

Last problem I experienced... Using the standard 15 foot lamp cord provided with the Yield Master II Supreme from Sunlight supply I am getting pretty high RF interference. It's not affecting my satelittle or wifi, but it is very loud on AM radio and most annoyingly, it renders my Bluelab Guardian constant meter unusable. The ph seems stable, but the temperate goes from 73 to 36 instantly and back, while the ec goes from 2.3 (what it should be) up to 3.0 rapidly, incrementally and back down. I believe this is due to the cord being unshielded (not intended for digital ballasts) and it's causing the 15 ft cord to turn into a giant antenna. The only company that seems to provide a product targeted at this problem is Lumatek. They offer a RF shielded 15 foot cord set that can be directly soldered into the hood that it suppose to reduce the RF to 5 feet max. Can anyone else confirm a similar problem with a digital ballast? Anyone successfully remedied it with the Lumatek cord set? any personal experience here would be great.

Just my feedback, would love to hear from someone who knows more about the noise from the ballast. Is it possible 2 were bad? Should I push them to try a 3rd unit to replace it with? Thanks guys!

DIGITAL BALLAST????? For the last 3 weeks i been doing reseach on digital ballast im changing from magnetic to digital.. and its been a little confusing alot of people tqalk crap about lumatek and quantums.. so it makes it a little dificult to choose one even the hydro stores put one another down. so i heard from 2 shops about SOLIS TEK.. so i did a little research and didnt find much because they are still brand new ballast on the market so since i had no bad or good reviews i decided to get 2 1000watt dimmable ballast 400/600/1000. i have 10 days using them and my babies are doing great and enjoying all that extra juice my ballast is giving my digilux mh.. one of my buddies checked them out hes been growing his own meds and using quantums 1000w and said that these solis tek are as good as his qyuantums or maybe even better there silent and i have digital cable and have no interference im glad i gave them a try maybe you should too.. has any one used or are using these ballast?

Buy a few of these place every 5' on your cord should eliminate the egress your receiving.

dimmable arent that great. just the reg 1000w ballast from hydrofarm is legit. cheap to, and lumens are just as high as any other ballast

Figured out that the EMI is entering from the EC/Temp cord so I think a choke core on that wire close to the meter might be my best bet. Will test soon as I make it to radio shack.
