LHC observes pentaquark

Even though I get the feeling nobody here cares.. LHC is whuppin ass.

Actually, what they are hoping to find next is evidence of super symmetry, which (if the models are correct) would further our understanding of dark matter and get us closer to grand unification.

It's an exciting frontier! Not to mention the LHC is the largest and most complex machine mankind has ever built. The discoveries here could lay the groundwork for an entirely new table of dark elements. Seeing as how it appears that the vast majority of matter in the Universe is 'dark', I think it's worth investigating. I expect a lot of new discoveries, especially now that they've doubled the collision energy and are approaching the designed maximum.

Can you please explain a bit about super symmetry, I believe that's from string theory correct, from looking briefly at both string theory and Loop Quantum Gravity I would place my bet on LQG being the correct unifying theory of relativity, it just seems far more intuitive to me.

Supersymmetry is a theory that aims to extend the Standard Model in an attempt to fill in gaps for Unification. First and foremost, you must know that we have 2 classes of particles. Fermions and Bosons. Fermions make up matter, Bosons carry a force. Fermions spin at half a unit, Bosons at 0, 1 or 2. Fermions want to all be in different states while Bosons like to share states. Supersymmetry gives each of these a sort of inverted partner that share the same properties like weight and quantum numbers as the ones we observe, with the exception of their spin. The common example is a bosonic version of an electron. Since we don't observe them, it's thought that the symmetry can be broken at any time, and usually is.

It is predicted by most versions of the theory that the lightest of these supersymmetric particles are electrically neutral and stable. They are also able to weakly interact with particles from 'our side' of the Standard Model. This is currently our most likely explanation for dark matter as we know it today. At least, one that we are able to test for. It's really what this machine was built to discover.

Strings and SUSY have early roots together, yes. Unfortunately, most if not all of the people who revived Strings have abandoned it. It sure is a pretty theory, but ultimately untestable with anything we have today or in the foreseeable future. That really sucks.

I've heard about LQG, but it ends there.
