Mag's First Grow - 156 Watts of CFL - Vanilla Kush!

Well, there is not much to say. I'd like to start of by saying I ordered from Attitude Seeds! I purchased two Barneys Farm Vanilla Kush seeds and received a free seed of Mazhar crossed with Great White Shark. This grow however I'll only be doing one plant of Vanilla Kush.

If this grow is successful, I will build a bigger box and probably throw in a HID. We'll see.

Lets get down to details, shall we?

I placed the Vanilla Kush in a small saucer of tap water for approximately 24 hours then placed the seed in a moist paper towel for another 24 hours. Within that time the tap root starting to break free so I decided to plant it in to the soil approximately a half inch deep or maybe little less. For germination I am using a small pot for now and then I'll be transplanting in to a 2.5 gallon pot for the rest of the duration when it becomes a big girl. I'll attempt some Low Stress Training and see how that goes as well.

I am using Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil along with Schultz Perlite. In the small pot is approximately 80% FFOF and 20% Perlite. Eventually I will also be using House & Garden's Soil A & B nutrients but not for quite awhile. Water used is purified using a Brita filter and was left out for approximately 2 hours to allow some chlorine to dissipate if any. Afterwards I took the below measurements.

Water PPM:075
Water PH:6.5~
Water:300mL~

I will be using 6x 26w 6500k CFLs that have an output of 1600~ lumens. I am debating if I should use only 4 or use all 6 because of temperature issues as the box seems to get up to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and ideally I'd like it to be 80 or less. I am using a 68CFM exhaust fan and an unknown CFM intake fan(it is probably 100+ CFM) as seen in the picture below which gives it a very nice breeze in that box which is why I am confused on the high temps. For germination I'll only be using 3 for now.

I'd also like to add that this journal is open for all to comment, make suggestions, or criticize. Again, this is my very first grow and am hoping for the best.

Agree nice setup...wish you the best.
Hate the planter... just me.
Thanks

It was literally all I could find (that I liked) and was pretty ideal in size. Its just a temporary pot, though. :D The thing I like about it is that once the soil is moist the sides of the pot darken and lighten as the moisture fades. I also have a moisture meter to aid in that area as well, but I thought that was pretty cool.

Woke up this morning to check on her and she was dry so gave her some water. Approximately 75-100mL was run off so next time I'll decrease it by about 50mL from 300 to 250.

Water PPM053
Water PH6.5~
Water Amt300mL

here we go. lose the planter. clay is alkaline and tapered pots rob the root zone of space. don't use an intake fan. mites and dust will get sucked in. forget PPM's in soil. that's all.

Meh, too late for the planter, it'll disturb the seed too much. As I said it is temporary anyway. I have to use an intake fan otherwise temps will raise up to 85 with just 3 CFLs and up to 90+ with all 6 on so I have to keep that in mind as well.

I like measuring PPM to see how well off my water is, and it doesn't hurt.

subbed =] again very nice setup..just gotta do something to keep those temps between 75-80 degrees and your baby will be just fine..ill be following this all the way through the grow! good luck!

85 is a little on the hot side, but barely. you can grow mj in those temps all day. you can put a tray of ice in your grow box and that should help lower the temperatures. that's just a cheap quick and easy fix for it.

WTF

So I checked on my seed and noticed a little poking out.

Upon closer examination, the whole thing, seed and tap root, was almost on the surface! I had to dig another hole and drop her in it.

Has this happened to anyone before? Hopefully she won't die

never heard of that one before..lets just hope you didnt damage that fragile little tap root when you put it in the new hole!
I don't think I did. I just dug a little hole next to it, then pushed her gently in to her new hole and then packed the dirt in.

So we'll see in the next couple of days. It DEFINITELY grew, it was twice as big as it was just 24 hours before when I planted it.

I'm excited!

UPDATE:

Its....marvelous!

Still had about 50mL of run off, but I think 275mL is good for this planter. Approximately 18 hours ago I also moved the planter to about 2 inches away from my CFLs.

Water PPM057
Water PH6.5~
Water Amt275mL

and we have lift off!

Only a total of 3 days and this thing has sprouted, I think its moving along quite fast.

black is ideal though right? or masked and blacked out pots?

Anything that doesn't transmit light to the roots would be fine.

Watering schedule depends on the type of soil and additives, how much soil, how big the pot is, air flow, heat of the box, etc

You can see I have been watering about 250-300mL for my pot size every 18-24 hours or so. So far so good. Once I upgrade to a 2.5 gallon pot I'll probably be watering about 1500 mL or more every 3-4+ days I assume, but I am not sure until I transplant and see what it can hold.

It is all trial and error until you find what works.

It has been 14 hours since my last photo. I know, obsessive much? But really I just wanted to post the difference that 14 hours had made! The first pic was taken at 9AM and the second one was at 11PM! Very exciting.
