I havent used one yet and I am in SoCal and you know how crazy our weather is now, warm days and freezing nights! Thats why I wont do hydro grows in the summer. Much easier to keep ideal conditions during the winter. IMHO no you wont need a heater in the Winter if you are SoCal.

I have a night vision, underwater, water proof, limited edition, fungas gnat shaped camera so I dont have to open my lids to see the roots. It cost me like $4,200.00
 
I dont like to brag but each root has its own camera and thermal temp refract-o-meter mag/amp on them. I have history data of approximately 1 terabyte worth in just last weeks growth.
