Again, it's a noble idea, but it will never work. Here's why:
  • All told, that all of history knows of, roughly 600,000 slaves were brought to the Western Hemisphere from Africa.
  • Just over half of those went to South America and the Caribbean, leaving roughly 300,000 that were brought to what is today the United States.
  • Of those 300,000, approximately 95% of them were brought in BEFORE the United States actually existed.
So what all of that means is that only about 15,000 slaves and their descendants would be eligible for reparations from the United States. The rest would have to seek reparations from the European nations responsible for their enslavement.

On top of all of that, many slaves have already accepted reparations after the end of the civil war and signed (or made their mark) to that effect. So those people aren't eligible either.

The simple fact of the matter is that the United States is either not responsible for, or have already paid reparations to the vast majority of slaves or their descendants.

That of course creates on its face a system that would seem to be unfair, turning the entire process into what is actually a lottery where everybody expects to win, but very, very select few ever will.

So what politicians are doing with it is using it to get votes knowing full well nothing is ever going to be done about it because there is, quite literally, nothing to be done about it in the vast majority of cases.

I'm just stating what WILL happen, not what YOU HOPE will happen and people trying to get your vote are CLAIMING can happen.

Live on wishful thinking all you want. In the end, I'm right. Nothing will ever be done about it. They've talked about it for the last 154 years and here we still are hearing nothing but promises during election cycles and absolutely nothing outside of that.

I support the idea of reparations and I think it is very possible that there is a way to move forward with something that makes a lot of economic sense and really addresses the inequality that has festered for generations. I think something like a way for black heads of household to get a home loan would be one way that would make economic sense in general. I think that an expansion of affirmative action is also a great idea. I don't think that there should be a question of race when someone applies for any kind of financial assistance but that such programs also should be expanded for needy families. The big thing to tackle is the systematic discrimination that leads to disproportionate arrests and convictions of minorities. Penalties for discrimination in business practice and hiring should also be made stiffer. There are a lot of ways to address the subject and make strides toward justice that also make economic sense. It's the right thing to do.

Yes, I agree, please don’t get upset and yelling won’t help. I know it’s an upsetting topic but with Marianne as president this issue will get addressed and the reparations will finally be paid . She has a plan set up and ready to go. So there is hope, please stay positive.

I feel better. For a while I was really concerned by the fact that fascism seems to be spreading around the world.

Now I know it will all be better soon.
