Master Kush Grow

Ok I will start off by saying I have never completed a grow from start to finish personally. There are family members I have learned from over the years, and then there are those of you on here that have also taught me a lot. I am attempting to grow 2 master Kush plants utilizing a drip system until their root system is large enough to move them into a DWC. Below are some specs on the Veg room and internal components:

4' x 2' x 8' Grow closet (the flower closet is the same set up and next to the veg closet)
1 - 12 lamp T5 30k lumens
1 - 6" inline fan (Dont remember CFM, but its more then I need for the Grow closet)
1- 6" Carbon Filter
1 - 200 watt heater hooked to a thermostat
1 - 500 GPH pump
1 - 8 port drip manifold for irrigation
Using fox farms nutes
My tap water is exactly 150 PPM so I have been using that and its working great from what I see.
Keeping PH at 5.8 daily
PPM 460 at the moment and that was dropped down due to me not realizing in the beginning that I should not have been using the recommended dosage for seedlings that fox farms tells you to. I am using half the recommended dose in 3 gallons of water.

I usually sit right at 72 degrees F when the light is on and it gets no lower then 65 degrees most of the time when the light is off, but that's also why I hooked up the heater recently. Everything seems to be going pretty well aside from the fact that I think I slowed my growth and burned one of them by over watering in the beginning. I have since moved from watering 4 times a day down to 2 and things seem to be better, but I would love to hear from you guys and get your opinions. These plants were germinated on 2/1/15 and are will be 2 weeks come Saturday 2/14/15.

I think I messed up by moving them immediately to a 4 x 4 x 4 rockwool cube instead of waiting for some roots to come out of the 1 x 1 x 1 cubes I started them in. Any opinions on that also? I will try to keep things up to date on this journal, and I would love to get as much feedback from more experienced growers as possible on things I can be doing differently or adding to make this a successful grow. Apologies for the not so great pics, but all I have is an Iphone 4 at the moment to take pics with, but they could be worse I guess :)

Thanks!!

Hey Bud,

Looking good so far,

I have a DWC system myself, so watering my plants is sort of a foreign concept to me so im not much help there. But as far as your rockwool concerns go, i dont think it matters too much, my personal preference is to trans plant to bigger rockwool, just as roots start appearing, (only because i had issues with breaking / crushing roots when they grew too long and I tried to transplant) whatever makes you comfortable.

However, I dont use nutes untill the roots grow thru my 2nd rockwool cube, and by then I just put it straight into my DWC system. In my mind that seedling is to young for nutes (unless mixed really really weak, and by then whats really the point)

All and all a really good setup.

looks good man. i like to soak my rockwool and drop my seed. then place rockwool cubes in a gallon ziplock and just spray water with a fingertip sprayer twice a day til roots show. as for dwc... i'm here to learn.

Thanks for the information Steve!! Just out of curiosity what size rockwool cube do you use for your second one? I totally agree with you on the not using nutes until you see roots through the second rockwool cube. I definitely will be doing this from here on out when starting seeds, however I plan to take clones and just rinse repeat for awhile on this strain until I get bored with it and what to try something new.

Seems like an interesting idea there, never heard of doing that :) I have always learned to germinate in water or the wet napkin and just wait for it to crack and then transfer. I'm sure everyone has their own way of doing things and honestly they all seem to work pretty well f

Had a wonderful thing happen last night. Every grower i'm sure loves to experience this...... My pump went out...yay!!! lol... I was pissed mainly because this thing was basically brand new and I had already had this same issue with the pump I had prior which was a cheaper eco smart pump. I bought this one ( see below pic ) which is a 529 gph elemental and had better ratings then the eco smart and seemed to be better built when inspecting it.

I had it in the reservoir for maybe 2 weeks and it stopped pumping water. The weird thing is after taking it apart and looking to see if something was causing the fins, and the armature (motor) to stick and I found nothing. It was squeaky clean inside the motor housing.

I cleaned everything out soaked it in some clean water for a bit and tried to run it with not luck, same thing. I watched it for awhile and it was the weirdest thing ive ever seen. It was spinning, but it was like it was stuttering every once in awhile and just could not get up to speed to start pumping water. I pulled it out of the water just for a second and once it cleared all the water out I immediately dropped it back into the reservoir and it would start to pump water just fine.

I did this probably 5 or more times trying to figure this out, and I had no luck lol. I gave up and had the wifey take it back to the local hydro store where I got it and they gave me a new one. Hoping this one does not have the same issue, but thankfully I researched this type of thing before starting my grow so I was prepared for the worst and I have a back up pump on hand if disaster decides to strike again lol.

Ok so its time for another update. Today I checked on the ladies and I was happy to finally see some roots coming in on the one. The only issue now is the other one is still lagging behind due to my nubiness in the beginning. Pretty sure I stunted the growth on it by over watering and using nutes ( even though it was half strength). I changed out the reservoir 4 days ago and added straight water. That's all they have been receiving now and from the looks of it they are much happier I think lol.

I am hoping the other one shows its roots soon so I can change them both over to the DWC. Is it an issue for roots to receive any light? I have read so many opinions on the internet that I dont know what to believe lol, anyone have any actual experience to back up whether or not this is ok or not ok? I would appreciate any feed back on this. I would say within the next week, especially if the other one will poke some roots out I will be moving them over to the DWC and hope for some good growth. Any and all feedback is much appreciated and welcomed, Thanks!!!!

Ok, so they were moved into their DWC homes on 2-16-15. Everything seems to be looking good from what I am seeing. They are being fed by hand twice a day, until those roots finally decide to drop in the water.

PH - 5.8 to 6.5
PPM - 394 to 408
Using 2 tsp big bloom and 1 tsp grow big for 3 gallons of water in each bucket.

I am keeping the 3 gallons of water in each bucket topped off daily. No roots have come through the net pots yet, but I am assuming I will definitely be seeing that within the next week or so on the bigger plant. The other one is still lagging behind, but seems to be recovering nicely.

I did notice that the bigger plant had 1 leaf that was turning a goldish brown color. I have been watching it for the last few days and nothing else has turned this color, but this leaf has not recovered either. Is this something I should be concerned about? I am assuming its a magnesium deficiency from what I have read, but if some ganja doctors wouldnt mind lending a little expert advice, I would greatly appreciate it :). Other then that I just wanted to get some pics up, and keep the journal rolling.

Time for another update. Plants are looking good and I just got done making my homemade Co2 generator so hopefully that gives them a little boost. I'll post some pics after the sealant dries. I have been doing some research and I found a lot of people that showed great results from using the yeast, sugar, water method.

I am just using 1 gallon jugs that will hold the yeast, water, and sugar, which will then feed into a smaller bottle half filled with water, which will have a tube coming out of the top of that attaches to my fans. Each plant will get one of these setups. I am just experimenting at the moment, but logically I cant see how this would not be a good thing lol, anyone have any experience with this?

Other than that everything is going great! However, I was disappointed this morning when I was dong a little LST on the 2 top fan leaves of the bigger plant, and I snapped one off on accident :( These 2 fan leaves were pretty big and to keep things even I decided to take the other one off also. I know some of you will shun me for doing that lol, but this is my first real grow and before making that decision I did do a little more research on defoliation. All I have to say to this topic is "LMFAO" ......This is one of the biggest debates in the grow industry it seems.

Again before you annihilate me, know that I would not have removed these had I not broken the first one by accident. I think these leaves are more beneficial attached then they are removed, but I just wanted to keep light distribution even so after snapping the first one, I thought it best to remove the other one also. If I was wrong to do this I guess ill chalk it up as a nooby lesson learned lol. Pics are below, so let me know what you think, and do feel free to provide any constructive criticism or recommendations.

Thanks!!

Time for another update. Yesterday I noticed that a couple of my fan leaves on the bigger plant were showing some brownish / gold spots all over, and the other plant is showing the claw symptoms on some of its fan leaves. I need some help here guys, cause I am kind of stumped.

  • I flushed the system for 1.5 hours yesterday using sledgehammer and this is the first real flush I have ever done on them since they germinated the first of February.
  • After flushing I added 2 gallons of new water to each system 3tsp/gal of FF grow big and 3tsp/gal of FF big bloom which equates to 6 tsps of each for the 2 gallons of water.
  • Also added 4 drops of sledge hammer to each DWC bucket per their instructions.
  • Also added 2 tsp 3% H2O2 (Store bought) which I have been doing for about the past week or so.
  • PH for each is 5.8
  • PPM for each is 1360
The plants are basically 1 month old at this point and I was planning to move them over to flower sometime in April. I would greatly appreciate any advice I can get on this. From what I have read the curling is a sign of to much Nitrogen, but I am just confused at how that is possible, beings they have been on this regime for awhile now. As far as the brownish / gold on the fan leaves I assume this is a cal/mag deficiency, but again I am confused on that one also.

Thanks in advance for any help!!!
