Sorry, but that practice isn't the best; Soil, coco or peat.
Do some searching on the subject if you disagree.
For soil I know for sure. Consistent moisture levels are key. I’m not a big coco guy but I always thourht they could take a drought between watering a little bit better.

if i make a soil that is very high in clay content...and another that is a sandy loam....you grow in sandy loam and ill grow in the high clay content....will you use a meter to decide an appropriate watering schedule? I know i wont use a meter to determine an appropriate watering schedule...im gonna use the plant

I use Ecowitt soil moisture sensors. They are pretty short and only measure the top 4-5 inches of soil unless I bury them or cut a slit in bottom of pot. They're wifi so it's pretty handy. You can setup alerts that shoot an email to your phone. I lift my pots but it's a good gauge to have and prevents me from overwatering when I don't feel like lifting every pot. After a few cycles I usually let it go into the teens before I water again. Before I'd just guess. I tried the analog ones but unless you remove and clean them they will corrode if you leave them in.

Seriously. The leaves are the most detailed and broad spectrum indicating device you can get. Your hand is second. Lift the damn pot or read the leaf.
