Mold fucked me over - lessons learned

I just harvested my Crystal grow today and there was a lot of mold.

I started from seeds at Christmas, using a tent, 400W Lumatek, negative pressure and an oscillating fan in northern CA. I put the lights on at night to help mitigate the heat problem.

I think the mold started in my previous grow and my tent is contaminated. When I water the plants in the tent, there is water dripping out of the bottom raising the humidity. If anyone thinks that the case, then how do you remove the excess water short of getting an AC unit to pump in cooler/drier air?

Since this is only my 2nd grow, I did not recognised the signs of mold. During flowering, some of the smaller fan leaves started drying out and shriveling. Not until harvesting did I learned that the base of these nodes had significant mold. I thought the leaf shriveling was just normal. Also 400W may not produce enough light to penetrate the canopy. I topped them, but did not do LST. I don't want to go higher to 600W because then heat will start becoming an issue. In the Bay Area, day time temps do not get too bad in the garage which is completely shaded. The upstairs room get into the 90's before cooling down at night.

What a disappointment to learn this at the end of the process. Learn from my mistake - be on the lookout for mold!

u could get a tiny dehumidifier and/or add a 4 inch inline to exhaust humid/hot air+ pull more passive air, this can be done cheaply ~ ur BCbuddy

oh and clean your environment with a 1 to 9 part mix of bleach and water this should take care of existing mold spores. Just let the area ventilate for at least 6 hours before the plants go in.

Big thanks to everyone for their support. I already have a cfm fan/carbon filter - it pulls from the hood and out of the tent. So the tent has negative pressure. Inside the tent is a small oscillating fan. Both fans are on the same timer as the lights. But yes, I will have to demold the tent thoroughly. I plan to do one outside grow during this spring/summer/fall. I hope this turns out better.

When I was harvesting earlier this afternoon, I noticed that stalks which were affected by the mold, essentially become hollow straws. The buds at the top (normally the best parts being the main colas, turn into this shriveled and brownish. The mold itself is this fuzzy, greyish cotton-like material. BE VIGILANT!

That sucks! I been in your shoes before, no fun! I feel your pain. Next round you should leave the exhaust fan on 24/7! Humidity rises at night. The plants will benefit from having constant fresh air. Plus your fan/carbon filter set up is designed to run continuously to remove odor!

agreed with goreala, leave the fans on. Btw was the mold hard to detect? in other words, does mold detection take careful examination or is it visible like powdery mildew.

bummer, dude. always make sure your pots are elevated off the ground, even if you are in a tent. And get rid of puddles if they don't evaporate in 24 hrs or less.

standing water = mold.

I wouldn't recommend smoking any of that bud. You do not want mold spores in your lungs. You could possibly make edibles but I'd advise against it.
