congrats on the amber trich..... :D chop time in a few days huh??
Yeah, thanks cheetah. I'm super excited. Did you flush yours before your harvest? When people say to flush before harvest for two weeks, do they mean give nothing but water? Or do they mean to give your plant 3x the amount the pot holds every day for two weeks? I guess I'm still confused about this.

Yes, I have heard molasses helps the buds nicely.

As to your flushing question, imo it is best to flush maybe a week or two before you chop them down. The more nutrients you feed them around harvest, the more of a chemical, unnatural taste the bud will have.

Again, flushing them about a week or two in advance is my best advice.

Your plants are INSANE! Amazing job for a first grow.

i usually germinate my seeds in a mixture of 1 part 3% hydrogen peroxide, and 2 parts water. Ex. i'll take a small plastic condiment container, put 2 cap fulls of peroxide, and 4cap fulls of water(the cap from the peroxide bottle). slowly the seeds will submerge to the bottom. i usually check mine every day and kinda push them under until most or all stay down. usually takes about 4 to 5 days for the stem to pop out about a quarter inch, which makes it easier for the tap root to catch on.just saw how long it took you to germ and you lost five seeds, sorry man. but this way i usually get every seed to germ. so try it .PEACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey everyone!

Thanks for all the kind words and helpful advice over the last week. I thought my efforts were a bit mediocre. But your kind words reminded me that this is my first grow and I'm probably being too hard on myself. I look back to the time when I wondered if I could keep a plant alive for six months! I'm feeling the love here at RIU. You guys rock.

On the flushing tip, I wound up just giving them water and molasses. I didn't do the whole flush the pot with 3x water thing. I'm thinking of cutting at least the colas this weekend, if not the whole plant, probably on Sunday when I have time to trim. I also realize that part of my trimming process is going to be using tweezers to pick all the damn cat hair off of my buds. I'm not looking forward to that in the least. My cat is damn lucky he's furry, cute and amusingly stupid.

I haven't watered them since the 16th, four days ago. The moisture meter is telling me that they don't need it. I guess they have stopped 'drinking' again for whatever reason. Maybe they have senioritis. My soil maybe compacted because I didn't use any perlite, a mistake that I will not soon repeat. Or they may have nute lock. I think if I grow in soil again I'm going to flush the plants every two weeks, like some people on here advise. It's not too much trouble to do and I bet I wouldn't have had so much trouble if I had adopted that into my schedule. It also seems on my shorter plant that it's developing a phosphorus deficiency. Purple purple everywhere! I'm not stressing about it though.

I smoked some sample buds and it's a great cerebral thing going on right now, which I've been really enjoying. I prefer to stay active wihen I smoke. Going out to movies or going to relax in the park. I've been looking at the trichs on the colas and they still only have about 15-20% amber. I'm ok with that.

Not much else to add. It may sound a bit sappy, but I'm already feeling a bit of remorse about watching them lose their green color and about the idea of chopping them. Ah, this bitersweet mortal life! I will miss checking in on them every day. And their sacrifice will not be soon forgotten (as I'm smokin' the hell out of it.)

Lots of pictures for your enjoyment.

Oh, one more thing. Do any of you subscribe to the idea that leaving your plants in 24-48 hours of darkness before you chop helps the trichs develop? I heard some people say that it does, some people say that they haven't noticed a difference. I love to hear what you all think.

Sounds like a legit idea, you could chop a few buds and then put the rest into darkness for a couple days. See if you can tell a difference.

Thanks guys! I was kinda awe struck by seeing that big pile o' bud. I didn't think that it would all add up to that much when I cut the branches. It was hard work trimming all of that (and picking off the hair.) Now that I'm drying it, I can see that even more hair is getting on it. So it will be one more round of hair pulling.

To answer you Fattony, I don't have plans yet, only dreams!!! But I did put my trimmed plants (what's left of em) outside to see if I can't get them to go back into veg. If I can get them healthy enough to take some clones, I just may do a second. But for now, i need to give my electricity bill a rest.

Hi,

So as you know, I harvested my first grow last week. I have everything hanging up in my closet drying with some fans to circulate air but not blow directly on the buds. It seems that everything is going ok, but I'm worried about over drying my bud.

I hung it up to dry six days ago. Two or three days ago, I noticed that some of the stems would snap. I took those branches and started to jar the bud. Halfway through however, I noticed that on other parts of the same stem wouldn't snap. So a stem that snapped in one place would only bend in most other places. In fact, it seemed that only the thick stems and thick parts of the stem would snap and none of the small parts would.

I hung some of that back up to dry thinking that maybe I was jumping the gun. Six days later, even the smallest, I mean, the ridiculously small stems won't snap, they will only bend (see pic.)

The bud feels completely dry to the touch on the outside. The stuff that I had put in the jar three days ago seems fine with no signs of mold (I've been burping them twice a day) AND I haven't seen any evidence of moisture in the jars at all. It doesn't seem to be "sweating" at all. I thought maybe it's because the jars are barely full. I just don't have the experience to tell when it's "done" drying.

And then reading through threads of the past year (yeah, I really did that) on the subject of drying, I found posts by several RIU members and staff that I completely respect (like fdd2blk for example) saying that they start to cure when the stems are still bendy.

So now I'm a bit confused. It seemed so simple before to wait until they snap, but now that...

1. The buds seem dry to the touch
2. The buds in the jar are not sweating any moisture.
3. The smallest stems are still bending

I'm concerned that I'm going to over dry and it will turn crumbley and maybe I should jar now even though the stems are still bendy. People say that you want 10% moisture content in the middle, but how in the world are you supposed to measure that?

What is your advice for me?
