Please please tell me if I'm wrong I assumed pot doesn't stink till like wayyy later in its growth cycle. Like several weeks after it flowers.

Now I keep a little bit of pot in my room and occassionally from time to time I get a wiff of it and go smell the plants thinking its them. At which point the plants don't smell and I remember its the bag weed.

Over the past week I haven't smelled them at all. But I've been noticing my bag weed seems to be smelling more and more by the day. To the point where I just got done checking the bag for holes. There was no holes so I go and smell my little 12" babies. And OMG they smell!

Is this normal? I really thought pot wasn't suppose to smell till later on and now I'm thinking when they get older if they smell this strong already they're gonna nuke my house with pot odor. Can I buy like 10lbs of fishtank carbon and blow a fan through it inside a tube? I'm about to take pics too to see if you guys can tell the sex yet, I see stuff growing on the nodes but its too small still for me to tell..

Smell in veg state is fairly common.

and yes, a carbon filter will eliminate the odor. There are tons of DIY threads on here for carbon filters and other odor eliminating solutions.

That is so cute!!! I'm sorry but I genuinely thought it happened between flowering and harvesting I was caught my suprise.

I'm trying to figure out how to take clearer shots of the nodes for sexing, but from what you guys can see blurry are the plants mature enough to sex? It seems on a couple plants I see 2 very fine hairs growing on the side of the leaf but they're soo tiny for all I know they could be tiny leaves.. although it looks more like a narrow piece of grass right now. And I hear anything that looks like a hair is basically female. But I'm just not sure if they're actually hairs yet.

It might look impossible in the pics to see but if I can get a clear shot you can definitely see some *possible hairs, I've just never sexed before so I can't tell. If not does anyone know how to get a clear shot with the camera? I have a Nikkon 5.0megapixel it SHOULD take clear pictures right? Is there a special setting I need to put it on?

and rasta I'm going to build a carbon filter I know where to get lbs of activated carbon cheap (I use to work at petsmart and my friend hooks me up with bags of it for my 50 gallon fishtank) But I'm going to see if I can just push air through a large mass of the fishtank carbon and see if it takes out any of the smell. I'd rather not spend money on a real carbon filter (assuming they're expensive) but I definitely don't mind trying to build one. Also I know theres other ways to remove odors like using an aquarium pump and gassing air through liquids with neutralizers in it. A large enough air pump would force the dissovled gasses into the liquid where they react and turn into solids in the liquid. I'm gonna fool around but I majored in chemistry in college so I like trying stuff like this. I'd also imagine just pushing water through carbon would work too, as air absorbs INTO the water and is filterd by the carbon. It would depend a lot though on how cold I can keep the water and how much surface area of the water I can expose to the air in the grow house. But theres all sorts of ways I can fight odors so I'm sure I'll figure out something that works.

put a piece of paper behind your plant when you take a pic so it will focus on the stem not the background

No need to go out and buy a carbon filter.

DIY DIY DIY.

There are so many ways to eliminate the smell with only a few dollars. Unles your growing like 20 plants or something crazy, professional filters arent worth the money.

Damnit I think I made another mistake with my soil.

I had bought Miracle Grow Top Soil like an idiot not realizing I think I need potting soil. It said it had slow release fertilizer like ammonium nitrate, phosphate, sulfate, cow manure and is suppose to be 3 month time release. The soil feel quite heavy, not airy like potting soil but I notice it holds water much longer than regular potting soil.

Is this good or bad should I transplant into actual potting soil? Or will the heavier soil allow for stronger roots?

Yeh I'm only going to do like 4, 4 foot plants. Plus the the grow box I caulked just so I can hold in CO2 properly as pretty soon I also want to start buying gallons of concenrated acetic acid from Home Depot to slowly mix with chalk and create a constant flow of CO2 in the box. Its a small grow house 5 x 3 x 3, but I still wanna do it as professional as I can this first time around. Just like you said most of the stuff I do will be DIY.

The plants in the picture are not showing sex yet. The small leaves in the nodes are the next branch for that node. If you see a thin leaf like structure in the node that does not have a serrated leaf margin it is called a stipule, and is not an indication of a female flower. The female flower will be composed of two bracts surrounding a creamy stigma (pistil) . You should transplant those plants into some better potting media. Sunshine #4 or Pro mix is a good premixed media out of the bag or try the fox farms products if you want an organic grow.

I'd honestly rather use a soil that I can buy at a store. I don't remember seeing either one of those you mentioned at Lowes a few days ago. I basically stood in the soil aisle for 30minutes reading all the bags and losing my mind because not one soil I saw there seemed to be recommended here.

I think I may try a nursery or something of the sorts, Lowes pissed me off that day because I had went with a list of names and didn't come back with even 1 of the recommended types.
