You are old enough to remember that at one time all news in print was accessed through a subscription to either a newspaper or magazine.
I have addblockerplus on all my devices. Anytime a site ask me to disable it, I just copy and paste the address to incognito. Easier than doing all the steps to white list a site.

Filtering through all the spam propaganda sites claiming to be news is a lot harder when you realize that it is all mostly garbage and hit paywalls to the actual information that professional fact based news sites have in place so they can pay actual journalist to do the research necessary to write.
