New guy here -- looking for a light

I've been searching all over for a while and I think I can say I know most of the things about marijuana now, but I'm short a light nonetheless. The best deal I found was a $120 400w hps. I'm only gonna grow a few plants at once, is there something smaller or less expensive that will work?

Once again, I got most of my stuff going. In a week, I'm gonna have a few things at my door... rolling papers, a 10-pack of emergency blankets to coat the walls with (70% reflection) and some afghani hindu kush. Also, I already have most of the other gear; I know how to germinate and I have a few 5-gallon buckets to grow in. Or I could get some free pots. Also, I know how to clone and as so if I get a good female I'll most likely just keep cloning it after I'm done with the first plants that I plant.

So, yeah, anybody know where I can get a grow light for less then $120?

dont go cheap when it comes to lights. the plants need light mroe than anything else, if you go cheap you will be buying more lights in the long run, save yourself the hassle and get a HTG Supply 400 HPS with digital ballast.

You won't get a 400W system for less than that really. Look for one of those kits. My cooltube with digital ballast, hangars, bulb and everything was like 145. Best deal I could find on a cooltube.. and they are so worth it in small spaces.

Oh, something else.
Is there a certain brand/kind of soil that I can just buy and trust to be between 6.0 - 7.0 pH? Spending another 20 bucks for a ph testing and raise/lowering kit sounds like a decent deal except the testing looks sort of cheap and might break on me.

And uh, something else... I'm gonna water them with room tempature water, but what kind? Should I just use tap? Or should I get that distilled stuff from wal-mart or another place?

HTG Garden Supply. 69 bucks for a 150watt hps 2-3 plants. they have great deals you could get a 400 watt for 160

yo i have kicked ass w 150 watt hps light plus i use cfl supplmental lighting along w 2 t8 lights! i have never yeilded under 3 ozs per 2 ft plant 3 ft i get 4 ozs a qp! I use earth juice,superthive,age old organics,alaska fish fertz,i use organic soil phd' if u have dolite lime for your soils ph youll be fine. and also use tap for soil organic. RO water doesnt contain everything organic grows need! I have done motovation,northernlights,chronic,bluehell,supersilver haze.

call BULLSHIT on that1 i belived the Myth in the beginng to! but its jus a myth1 i have been useing tap water for 3-4 years1 no problems ever!!!

i can tell you from my mistakes as a beginner. dont skimp on lights times are hard and money is tight. my advice would be buy a good brand second hand one of ebay and buy a new 400w bulb after all its the bulb that grows your bud. the only thing better lights do is noise and energy reduction.........

How big is your grow space buddy? Is a 400 HPS going to be what you need with what you are working with? Thought of any alternatives? You will be surprised how much heat a 400 will put off, so with your original price of 120 bucks, you are still looking at paying to resolve venting issues.

Not trying to de-rail you, just wanting you to look at this in a multi-faceted way.

I think 400hps will be enough for sure. I'm just gonna grow in a closet. I'm doing some other things, too.
1: As a precaution I have ordered a doorknob so nobody can go in the closet without the key
2: I ordered a pack of 10 emergency blankets, aprox. 55 by 65 inches, 70% reflective. Better then alluminum foil. (For the walls)

Oh, and phenix, do you use reflective wall stuff? Because perhaps I can make it work with just the 150 (If that's enough for 1-3 plants) + The reflective on the sides which will help give the plants a bit more light.

Also guys, is there any way I can fertilize my stuff well without spending a lot? I heard it can be costly for some fertilizer stuff. I don't want to spend much if possible.

Also, I have a little weak rotating tower fan. I guess I could use that to help ventilate the plants? I heard that having a fan blowing a small breeze at the plants makes them grow stronger, in addition to ventilation.

Flat ultra white paint is way better. It's 90% or more reflective depending on titanium oxide content. The stuff at lowe's, olympic premier is really good. About 10 bucks for a quart. So much easier than hanging stuff on the walls.

Does it look like normal white paint? If so that would be a great idea, except I already ordered the blankets, and I would need a tarp or something for the floor, plus my bro and mom would probably think something is up.

I USE SIMULAR ITS HEATING AND COOLING RELFECTIVIVE STUFF I USE IT AND WHIT E FLAT WALLS. AS WELL.
