New to all this Autoflowering

After being busted a few times going and getting smoke I've decided to grow my own for personal use.

I was looking at the lowryder #2 and I basically want to get a crop up and running asap

I did have a few questions though which i'm hoping you lovely people could help me answer.

1) I live in a tiny upstairs flat I got a grow spot all lined up but how much does this all smell, will it be noticeable to my neighbours?

2) Whats the best lighting to use, Im thinking led lights?

3) For a first time inexperienced grower how much roughly could I yield?

4) How potent is it to smoke compared to your run of the mill street stuff?

5) If i buy feminized seeds, does that mean my plants will all be female?

6) I'm pretty good at following instructions but how easy is it to grow?

7) Whats the best small scale setup that doesnt produce alot of heat?

I ask the last one because i've seen growers before who have like a wardrobe lined in aluminium tin foil with big buld floating above, I don't want a massive setup just something about a foot maybe a foot and a half high.

Thanks guys

I recommend staying away from autos man... Ive never grown them personally but have had a friend grow them twice with poor results....If you do go with autos, dont expect a large yeild... and there a weak smoke also... Ill probably catch flack for this but its just my opinion...best of luck with whatever you decide to go with ...

id go with lowryder 1 its much easier to grow, doesent grow as tall (further concealment) doesnt smell as much, has better genetics for growing in a broader range of environments and still produces decent smoke for little labor. it can cheaply be provided adequate light with cfls. they can be grown with one 21 watt cfl and produce 3 grams of dank in 2 months with no nutrients, i mean this plant is great for beginners and is a fast turn around. grow em nicely and they can produce up to 45 grams and about the feminised seeds yes all of them will be female which is another point...lowryder #1 is herm free so you dont have to worry about seeds in your smoke and if they are feminised you could stagger your grow one plant a week and harvest a plant every week for however many seeds you get goin.

1) depending on the strain, yes. Put packing tape over your door cracks. Take it fold it a little less than half way so its still sticky and stick it to the door, this will dramatically cut down smell
2) LEDs are horrible for the price. Stick with HID or CFL they're both way better than LED
3) about 1/2 ounce to an ounce a plant. If you're unlucky you'll get about 7 grams per
4) lowlife sells some decent crosses, I didn't notice a difference between my auto AK 47 and my big bud x skunk #1. In fact the AK probably had a better high.
5) they'll either be female or hermaphrodite but usually female
6) growing is very easy. People just do stupid things like over water.
7) 250 watt HPS is your best bet, but most hydro stores will tell you you should use at least 400 watt

1) They definitely do smell, but none of my apartment neighbors have complained.
2) I use a mixture of a 150W HPS and some daylight CFLs.
3)For your first time you might not get that much. But stick with it! I got 3Oz off my last plant. It was a fast bud number 2.
4) The same as any other strain, except better because it's homegrown. No one can tell the difference if grown halfway decently.
5) They should all be female. I'm on my 4th grow. All female withing 14 days.
6) Easy as pie. Don't feed if she doesn't need it. Don't transplant. Don't top. DO tie down your plant to get maximum light exposure.
7) My setup never gets above 84, which honestly is just fine for your plant. It only gets that high when i close my closet door. I have 1 150W HPS + 3-4 26W CFLs. A small 6 inch fan, pushes my air conditioning to my plant so she stays cool enough.

Don't let these people tell you not to grow autos, as I'm sure you will get some. They don't know what they're talking about, take it at that.

You're friend must not know how to grow. These plants are no different from regular plants. Yes, most might have a smaller size, but not all. They are very stable, in my experience. And they're getting bigger yields. I couldn't have been happier with my fast bud. It's all about the grower, a plant is a plant. It will grow if you don't mess it up. Don't give advice on something you know nothing about.

autos are great. I regularly pull an oz and a half off them in about 60 days. The smoke is there too there are a ton of kick ass auto strains out there - I'm personally not a fan of lowryder 1, but a big fan of short stuff, and sweet seeds. Ona Gel can help contain the smell.

Id like to answer question 7 -

7) Whats the best small scale setup that doesnt produce alot of heat?
Has to be flourescents for me, slightly more heat watt for watt than cfls but they beat both cfl and led hands dowm imo, heat of flouros is easy to deal with in a small grow although go with T8's over T5's if your growing in a hot room.

One futher idea is to grow some Lowryders and some normal 12/12 light dependant strains and endevour to get a flowering box in a few weeks, that way half your veg room will be autos and half will be veg plants vegging ready for flowering in your recently purchased flowering box. Just a suggestion. Peace

1. It will stink. You want a carbon filter if possible, if that doesn't work or if you can't get one there's a whole range of smell-stopping equipment on the market, it can get a little pricey

2. LED lights are in development and are very hit and miss, some say they're excellent from specific brands, others say no matter the brand they're all worthless and overpriced

3. Also on my first independant grow, but this depends on a lot of factors, strain, area, light wattage and what kind of medium you're using to grow are big ones.

4. Grown well it will knock most products you've smoked out of your mind, and there's a lot of guides out there on just how to get these girls to put every last ounce of their strength into making THC. I have a friend who grows Rokerij's Cheese, which should be a mild bud with a big yield, he makes it a massive yielding super-smoke just out of growing ability.

5. Yes and no, 99.9% chance it will start female but under the wrong conditions they can turn hermaphrodite, lots of people say certain seedbanks have more stable seeds than others and stress is often labelled as a big reason for them turning

6. This is a personal thing, if you cut corners things will go wrong, especially in the early stages, other than that it's really experience based

7. CFLs or LEDs tend to be the choice for people growing very small scale, the problem with larger HPS and MH bulbs is their heat production, which requires better ventilation and more space between the bulb and canopy. As stated before though, LEDs are largely untested and have had mixed reviews. T5s are supposed to work a treat.

Also, no tin foil, get away from that idea right now =P get that wardrobe lined with matte white, or find yourself some mylar and make sure there's no creases. Tin foil is too good at generating hotspots, which is like giving the universe a laser to point randomly at your plant

If someone tells you to use cfl's or leds in your situation dont believe them, the standard for most clone and veg chambers has always been flourescents for the reasons you too have, can utilise small space, can yeild a lot bigger than cfl and led plus keep plants more short and compact.

In no way shape or form would i recomend a new grower grow with small cfl's or leds, you will be dissapointed with the yeilds, i wouldnt even put a 26watt cfl in my bathroom let alone try and light anything with a LED. Of course you can grow plants with them but seriously you wont be happy with the returns, flourescents or get somewhere bigger and get some hps even then you will most likely be using flourescents for the veg room and not cfls or LEDs. Peace

I pulled 150ish grams off four autoflowering plants in 65 days using led seed to harvest.

Yep and the decent LED's, what would i expect to pay for somthing like 150watts (which lets face it isnt gona yeild as much as 150watts of flouros)???

Well documented that flouros outperform cfls and leds and for the same light equivelant actually burn cooler as well as being able to have external ballasts so less grow room heat again. Peace

they are really expensive though. I paid about a grand for my whole set up. That being said, if I wanted to sell the 150g I just grew in about two months with them I would have paid for my investment and then some. If you do go led make sure you do a lot of reseach about the companies you are considering patronizing.

There are a ton of people out there to make a quick buck off pushing shitty led tech on novice growers, which is a real shame because this def fuels a lot of the troll rage on this site. Shit I'd be pissed if I didn't do my research and wound up with a super expensive over hyped lite brite set up.

I don't know about that buddy, I've grown with everything except plasma induction. LED watt for watt blows away anything else I've ever used. I used to use 2 X 400w air cooled hps plus about 400w of cfl. Was able to drop the wattage down to 690w of led output and maintain the same yield with increased quality. I'm using roughly half the wattage now. I don't want to get in an argument here I'm just sharing my personal experience. The math isn't there to support your claim. Also leds produce almost zero heat, it is 72 degrees f in my room right now.

1) I live in a tiny upstairs flat I got a grow spot all lined up but how much does this all smell, will it be noticeable to my neighbours?
get some ona blocks. dont risk it
2) Whats the best lighting to use, Im thinking led lights?
LED works but its really expensive. go with HID lighting for great results if u can contain heat
3) For a first time inexperienced grower how much roughly could I yield?
very poor. unless you get lucky
4) How potent is it to smoke compared to your run of the mill street stuff?
lowryder isnt that good of a strain
5) If i buy feminized seeds, does that mean my plants will all be female?
no, 10% will be herms
6) I'm pretty good at following instructions but how easy is it to grow?
easy, just got to be persistent and patient
7) Whats the best small scale setup that doesnt produce alot of heat?
use a vented light system, adequate air exchange, and use lower powered lights like CFL and LEDS

* my advice to ANY new growers is to AVOID autoflowers. once you fuck up initially, there is no going back. I.E. my first grow i bought 20 vertigo seeds, germinated all of them, and accidentally burnt half of them during the 2nd week (i gave them 1/8strength nutes and they still burnt). Go with regular weed plants.... you fuck up, you veg longer. until you get a good grip at everything, dont grow autoflowers

@yusuo:

You got very good advice here. I completely agree with Kingrow on the light. LED's are a developing technology right now. IMO they have a big future but we are still in the present :) HID lights ( Metal Halide & HPS ) lights are cheap and they just work. Even if you dont get it quite right, they still give you a nice yield. LEDs & cfls seem to take a lot more skill and work to get comparable yields.

Also, if you have questions, almost everyone here knows about HID lights, while LED's are still exotic.

The wattage of the light depends some on your grow space, foot print and cooling. Probably either a 250W or 400W as Nusky said.

I would say dont worry too much about reflective sheeting right now. There are more important things to get right. Recovering wasted light by reflection is worth doing, but you get fine yields without it. I still don't have reflective sheets up in my setup and I have gotten nice yields. Get the basics in place and then worry about improvements in performance

eh, he's right lowryder 1 sucks but man I've had some killer autoflower grows with nuggets that rival most photoperiod grows in my area. I've been at it for a while though. I will say one drawback is on average for every six plants I grow I get one limp dick plant that only yields about a half oz. Short Stuff Auto-Assassin and MI-5 are super easy to grow for beginners, takes roughly 8 weeks to go from seed to harvest and they bring the goods on the smoke. I've grown some autos I was dissapointed with in the past, they've come a long way. Also if you're new to this it gives you a shorter plant life span, ie - less time for a potential fuck up. Plus your space is limited and autos, with the shorter life cycle, won't stink as long or as much as a plants with a longer flowering period.

Someone gave me Emily's garden for Christmas last year. I'm on day 10. I've grown successfully with soil and other mediums, but this time I needed far more discretion. I realized the kit comes with everything one needs to get a decent start, although I have my own products I prefer. For lighting I have done well with cfl's that put out 2800 lumens. I use 3 lights for this unit which is 26x6x16.

I've had hermies before.. and cut their little balls off every time they grew back :p (sorry guys)

My worst problem growing (with the exception of soil and bugs) is me.... I tend to over tweak. Like a chef, a little more of this, a little more of that....
as long as the ph is OK, there is little reason to mess with it... except one day this week I left them alone after checking the ph...
well the leaves are as long as the stems, so I got a bit top heavy and needed to prop them up a bit.

Good luck.
