Nutes beyond the basic grow/bloom: are they really worth it?

Thanks everybody! I'll just get the basic grow/bloom stuff from AN. Good thing that the only necessary nutes seem to also be the cheapest of every line.
just seems to me you already had your mind made up that you were going with AN....so why ask?

seems strange that in today's on-line world that your only choices are AN or BioBizz

Because I'm fairly new to this and I don't know what I'm doing... The dude at the hydro store sold me some AN telling me I won't have to adjust pH and shit, which seems attractive... I appreciate any input from experienced growers, and if you're telling me they suck I won't use them...

I'm very paranoid, so I would never buy something like nutes online, only in person and using cash, and even then I'll still be tripping :(

But I can also get Atami stuff.

the basic Lucas formula said to use Maxi-Gro for veg and use Maxi-Bloom for flowering....but latter on he simplified it and said you can use the Maxi-Bloom from start to finish
I never liked lucas in veg(5/10-micro/bloom), and I would never rock maxibloom in veg.
The maxigro is a little more potent than the bloom also, so bonus! Lol
If anything, continue the maxigro well through the stretch phase, for optimum health

I rock the MaxiBloom full grow. Works fine. I think ISK uses grow and bloom. Good growing with however you do what you do. Choices..........

And I just gave my opinion on it. Take it how you want to.
I've been growing with GH for almost 25 yrs. Been using the maxi and nova on and off since they came out. My experience with the stuff is in my last post. Good day:-)

Sure. Just stipulating the simplicity of the Maxibloom only Lucas Formula works fine on my end. Several years ago j tried the Recipe for Success formula with like 7 or 8 different bottles to mix throughout the grow. I didn't see much if any improvement over the 3 part GH Flora series. So, then I tried the Lucas and although I don't see much in the way of improved yields or quality, it's cheap. Easy. And effective.

Heck I don't have a problem with AN. Never used it so, no experience at all with it. To me it's about what is effective for me. Cheap, easy and hassle free won the race.

Good growing bro.

Word! Whatever's clever.
I guess what I was sort of getting at, is that buying and using the maxigro along with the maxibloom doesn't make it more difficult. Hell, when Lucas came out wit that lucas formula, i didn't find it made anything simpler. I didn't like the way my plants looked in veg, so I went back to the 3/2/1.
To me, I get healthier yields rocking the maxigro through the stretch, VS. using the bloom rite at the flip. :-)

When I was a noob......

I'm always coming across stuff in the garage or the shed, man cave and wherever I bought when I first started growing. I got the Superthrive, couple of bottles of cloning gel or powder. I got like 15 bottles or more of basic nutes and supplements. I got MG veg and Bloom powders. I got soil PH testers and moisture meters. I got 3 PH meters, only one works. A PPM meter I rarely use anymore. Some kind of chemical Shake em up PH tester thing. Several air pumps, tons of hose and bubbler things I bought for the water farm I only used once or twice. Got some of those decorative self watering globes(still in the box) you fill up with water and stick in your soil grow. A bag of Sphagnum Peat Moss(WTF did I buy that for?). I've bought $125 worth of 65 watt CFL's, an induction light I broke, 2 LED lights, a 150 HPS. I've got a water farm system. Grown with Miracle Grow soil. 4 or 5 Hempy buckets laying around with holes in the bottoms of them. Spent a couple of weekends building a cabinet. Cost me lots in wood stain etc. I got rigged up old computer fans I once made and used. Other fans and just all kinda crap I bought and maybe used once or whatever. I know I'm forgetting some stuff.

Noobs. We make fun of them, but.... I was one too. lol.

That's hilarious. I'm in the middle of cleaning out my room and debating about what to do with stuff while debating how I'm going to do my next grow. Heaven forbid I reuse any of my old set ups.

Yea no need for expensive stuff. If your not growing organic it doesn't matter. Salt is salt. Hell some generic 5-5-5 or 10-10-10 would do just as good.

Just like body building supplements these days it is bullshit. And some of these companies design there product leaving essential stuff out. so you have to buy the full range spending copious amounts of money. For something that can survive and flourish with some fresh air light and basic nutrients. Don't be fooled people these companies are ripping you off with their magic concoctions....and after all they are businesses whose goal is to make money....

In fact believe me or not I no longer use hydro nutrients or mediums at all now for my indoor grow. Everything I use apart from bulbs comes from my local hardware store. Rather than spending a couple hundred dollars each cycle on nutrients and mediums. I buy a nutrient called yates thrive which is designed for outdoor application (I live in australia) one for grow one for fruit and flower. It comes in powder form. And believe it or not my yields are at least equal if not better than when I used to use hydro specific brands. Oh yeah my nutrients sell for 7 dollars a packet which lasts a whole cycle with leftovers for the next one. I know I will never waste my hard earned money feeding bullshit companies ever again.

Yea mostly I'm just gonna use the Maxibloom all the time from now on. Like this. 7 grams of Maxibloom powder, 1ml CalMag and about 1/2 ml of PH brings the PH to 5.8-6. Feed every other day in a 3-5 gallon Hempy bucket once the plant is established. And that's pretty much it. I also have some GH Floragro left over from my GH 3 part nutes I keep on hand in case I need more N. Other than that I have several left overs from other nutes I've just been mixing and putting on trees and outdoor plants. Just to get rid of them because they are getting really old anyway.

I don't have a journal and I actually followed this one from ISK when I first started using the Lucas Formula. Our methods are very similar although I am kinda lazier about it and ISK puts a bit more effort into his. His journal is a very good example for Hempy Bucket/Lucas Formula and auto growers.

More info on Lucas Formula can be found here. If the site is working again?
LucasFormula.com

I def reco Hempy Bucket and Lucas Formula. I can't think of any cheaper or an easier less time consuming way to grow.

Good luck.
yea that sites down,, i was thinking the lucas formula was a 2 part of gh,,, so i can just use one part with the added cal mag all the way through grow and harvest.... i use dwc can i use it the same way.. Im trying to figure if buying the powder nutes will be cheaper than using the premixed liquid nutes

From what I remember, ISK uses the two part GH Maxi powders Lucas style, and you can use the 3 part bottled Flora series. Sorry, don't remember how to mix it. Also, I believe you can use any other 2 or 3 part nutes, but you might have to do some math to figure out how to mix it to the right strength. I never tried Lucas in DWC so I can't really give any experience. Did use GH Flora 3 part and it worked fine in my water farm. Sux that link doesn't work anymore. It was a quick read to give you a general idea of how to do it. I'm sure that somewhere on the Trollitup someone is using Lucas for DWC. Hempy is basically a passive hydro method.

Everyone has their own way of doing things. Some people just stick by the saying if it aint broke dont fix it. IMHO and in my experience ive seen great things from AN. Ive seen great things from other companies aswell. My 2 cents tho is that there is a reason you see alot of professional, big warehouse grow guys using AN. The shit works, its fairly easy, and produces a quality product with good yields. Not saying you cant get all that from other nutes but just because some people dont buy into it doesnt mean its not an excellent product. Use Advanced, you wont be disappointed

Gee wizz, sorry to hear your choice's are so limited! I have never said AN didn't work.....It does. If that's your choice's, go ahead and use the AN. I might use a Silica supplement with any of your choice's.....You should know that the Si will lower the pH of your mix....But media dependent, not a big problem.....

Our problem with AN is how they market and what they claim.....BS......If you chose it. Feed only every other watering....

Good luck!

Thanks guys!

I learned from this thread that in addition to grow and bloom I would also need micro nutrients. What are those, exactly? Do you know if the AN grow and bloom already contain those, or do I need to buy a separate thing? The bottle does have a whole bunch of different chemicals listed on it...

So Silica is important as well eh? Does that mean yet another bottle of overpriced crap, or can I use silica bags from shoe boxes or something?

Thanks again!

I'm sorry, are you talking about me? Why would a shill compare their products to snake oil?

I can't get Dyna-Gro where I'm at, I only have either BioBizz or AN... When I asked ISK what was wrong with AN's basic nutes it wasn't a rhetorical question; I was actually hoping for an answer, so that I may switch to BioBizz if needed.

Edit: I can also get Atami products. Who should I go with?
inflated prices, order the stuff online. Down my way we have a local store but they sale their fertilizer 30-50% higher than u can get it off the web for.

cal mag supplement other than your basic NPK is usually the most important micro in my grow. with out it my plants suffer. I've heard good things about silica but I haven't used it before.
