its not a truffle is it?
i think its the seed casing
I have never seen anything like this before. I was loosening the dirt on a plant and found this walnut-sized growth on the stem under the dirt. It's really hard. I was jabbing it with a chopstick. Any insight?

Damn that's really weird. What is a truffle?
Some times bacterial infections cause weird tumor like growths. Maybe this is an example. They make tobacco pipes out of hundred year old briar wood that comes from the root system of the heather that has bacterial infections.
Why would you be unearthing the plant? Is it unhealthy?
Agree with the seed shell how big is the plant?
What is valuable about it? Sorry I am curious. A truffle I mean
