My theory is that long ago there were a bunch of people who devoted themselves to building something worthwhile. While you could debate the merits of each, they built something. But over the last thirty years, the ownership of these things fell into the Mitt Romney style douchebags who buy them and grind them into dust under the flag of the free market. These scum suckers are only maximizing the return to their investors though. Practically bound by law to do it. And we all end up in a pile of our own filth.

But the programming is NOT more diverse, that's the whole problem. Everything is degenerating into the same show with variation only in setting and specific task. What we have going is a lack of imagination at the hands of over indulgence in self gratification. We are collectively turning into sad little robots because money talks and the majority are "voting" for a less and less imaginative model. I believe it is a strange and very desperate attempt for the subconscious to force us into a corner in hopes that we might notice that we've divested our evolutionary path into a cul de sac.
And the sad thing is, this diversion is completely irrational and we know it. Everyone is trying to "get back to" their starting position, the place when they felt like THEIR reality was interesting enough to be the main "show they watched." But we can't see the irrationality of chasing that externally, even though each moment passing is another failure for that approach to manifest a sense of contentment.
There is art, and then there is digital heroin. There used to be a bigger grey zone. But our ignorant denial is so blatant that marketing teams are now "calling our bluff" on the idea of cultivated awareness. They don't even bother to hide it anymore. They know it's garbage. They know you know. They know you try to tell your idiot friend or family member. And they also know he thinks you're stupid and keeps watching. Because, frankly, they still have us collectively by the balls. After all, the majority are indeed bluffing or "faking it til they make it" with their attitudes towards cultivating a genuine interest in what is good, what is quality, and what is unique and creative.
Unfortunately, although the art calls for us, the digital heroin is already in the veins. The marketing teams take advantage of that and will fly their flag right in the face of the awareness-promoting aspects of humanity because they know that the addiction undermines rational thought.

Alas, most of what you say seems true. But there are also some damn fine programming being done and it is not too hardto find it. I feel almost like America is going all Brave New World and breaking society into Alphas and Betas and Deltas and Gammas. But in reality it seems to be heading into a Gibsonian future. Decisions will be made and trends will be set by a select few extremely wealthy. Most of the rest will have menial jobs with bare subsistence lives.

I couldn't agree more that free thought/will is being replaced with the next 'must have' fad or thingymabob. I'd also agree that collectively we know how fucked up it all is and do nothing because we can tune in to a channel of repeats that make us think if happier times. Ever read '1984' or 'a brave new world', if they tell us we've never had it so good should we blindly believe them?

Nor do I. Great little explanation. My favourite drama series are from the US as well as animated cartoons, i have a weakness for being caned out my tits and watching archer, bobs burgers, rick and morty and king of the hill.
I watch a lot of the BBC stuff from the 80s and 90s too.
Im just perplexed at the motive of some of the reality shows, like a friend of mine told me theres this show in america where like 30 guys live in a house and date this woman and try to marry her? lol

Sadly, those shows are quite common. They are unwatchable crap.
Fox just kicked off their newest bullshit reality show called Utopia. Oof! They took 14 people and put them in a compound for a year. It's going to be awful but so far has been kind of funny. The ex-con gets all pissed off because the other people spent some money on groceries and got carrots and brown rice and radishes, etc.. He just wanted ramen-because "they got these seasoning packets that you can use to season foods, dawg!" it will be dreck.
Every stereotype is there. Fluoride-fearing hippy, no-teeth tea-party hillbilly, angry Libertarian, egotistical lawyer, hot nudist polyamory chick, dumbass preacher with fear of nudists. I already regret knowing this much.
KOTH was one of my faves, as is bob's burgers now. Have you been able to watch mike judge's "Silicon Valley"? I just realized that our avatars a cross-cultural. If you didn't already know this about Americans.... About 95% of the geeks and nerds here grew up on BBC fare.

Oh man thats had me in stiches. Where can i find a clip of that? I find some american stereotypes fucking hilarious, i think its the accent. I dont know i find it funny the general attitude. Like Kenny Powers from eastbound and south or sumat? I would love to hang out with someone similar for just like an afternoon. And an apallachian american too.
i also really liked how the show evolved and developed around Hank Hills character change and all the multitude of subtle plot references throughout the whole series. Ye I would LOVE to meet a real life Buck Strickland. Its a really good show to watch the day after you drop mandy and twat weed.

For real, the show was written intricately and with an almost creepy sense of foreknowledge of it's own future storylines for the most part. There is a great sense of interconnectivity throughout the series, and an almost meta sense of self-awareness and cheekiness. I have seen every episode several times and still put it on to ease my mind when I just need to veg out a bit. It's either KOTH, Futurama, occasionally an old Simpsons, or Taxi. (Yes, Taxi... I love this show and always come back around to watch it again eventually... Judd Hirsch, Christopher Lloyd, Danny DeVito, Andy Kaufmann and Tony Danza... can't go wrong)

Fox.com probably have loads of clips, but they are advertising an ap that lets you peep at the show members in real time - with the obvious implication that nudity is possible. Maybe it is and this a workaround for them not being able to show boobies on tv here.
The show just started. The ex-con is taxing, violating, claiming indigenousness to the land, and finally he any the redneck crack the safe holding the group's $5000 and take their share. The ex-con initially wanted to have his share of the money put up for when the show finishes (a year) - now he just wants ramen. The two got pissed off because the bought big bags of white rice and brown rice. The white was $8, the brown $20. So they called it "rich people's food" and stomped the shit out of some canned goods.

Thankfully the comedy channel is still funny. I love "Drunk History". Amazing show. I am not sure what the show would look like if it was called "stoned history" perhaps too much like a @Finshaggy video.
