Anyone with any experience with using peat potting soil as a growing medium? How does peat help the plant (if at all) and is it bad for them in any way?

Hi,

I use a soilless mix called BM1 (from Berger) that is very similar to pro-mix with very good luck. It is 80% sphagnum peat moss from canada and 20% perlite, vermiculite, lime, and inert matter. The mix holds water very well, and doesn't let the plants get overwatered unless you (or mother nature) goes crazy with the H20. BM1 does not have fertilizer in it like many potting mixes, so you can use your own fertilizer program. I pay about $20-25 for 3.8 cu' at a garden store. Good Luck!
PS- BM1 works good outside and in.
