plugging my 3 prong inline fan into a 2 prong outlet?

So basically i got this 190cfm fan, with a carbon filter, but the fan is way too fast on high and the carbon filter really doesn't do it's job. So have this dimmer switch but it only has the two prong plug in. I cut the little nub off the end and plugged my fan into that. how dangerous is this? Ive done this plenty of times with other electrical equpiment and never had a problem. As I understand the third ground plug protects against electrical shock and what not.

any thoughts/advice?

Is this plugged into a GFCI that functions correctly?
what is a GFCI? I have one of those outlets in my bathroom with a test and a reset button on it, is that what you're referring to? I have the fan plugged into an extension cord that and then into a normal household outlet with 3 prong holes on it

Im no expert but you did right by using the extension cord.Maybe to be safe you could plug the fan into a power strip instead or plug your extension cord into it

Yes, that is correct. All the equipment in your grow space should be plugged into outlets that are protected by GFCIs. Having equipment protected by GFCI helps reduce the risks caused by eliminating the grounding plug.

okay thanks. its actually plugged into an extension cord that has a small bar with 3 plugins on it. it feels really high quality, its durable feeling and heavy.

FYI op,they make a two prong adapter thst fits onto a grounded plug(3 prong).maybe 3 bucks.with electrical stuff,it's best to keep all parts in place.

Does that dimmer switch actually work with your fan? Should have a ceiling fan controller rather than a light dimmer switch if that's what you have. I just break the ground plug off something like a fan if it needs to go into a 2 prong outlet.

it works pretty good actually. I read in the forums that a bunch of people were complaining about a hum from the fan when they used a speed controller, but with this light dimmer it gets so nice and quiet. I actually had to put my hand over the exhaust to make sure it was still working! nice steady stream of warm air. keep having heat issues now though with that damn dehumidifier in there. my old place was so private that i could just open up the windows and let cool air in.

A window style A/C unit makes a better dehumidifier and keeps the temps down too. Run on recirculate with the exhaust blowing away from the grow room and you can even rig something up to collect the water and reuse it. Problem is if it keeps the temps and RH down there will be no fresh air getting into the room and the plants will run out of CO2 so you'd need to add that.

I tried a dimmer on this huge biscuit fan I have that I'm going to use for the addition I'm building to my grow room and it rattled like a diesel engine with a bad bottom-end bearing. Made my inline fan rattle too but not as bad. I got the ceiling fan controller and it runs both fine at any speed. There are different types of dimmers so maybe you got one that uses the same kind of circuitry as mine. I don't know what the difference is but there is a difference.

For what it costs to buy all the parts to make my own I could get 2 on Amazon. :D
