Because that's what we pay them for Sherlock. If they can't handle difficult situations as non-lethal as possible maybe they should be a cook or caterer instead? When they arrived all he had was a metal shoehorn and cane, why the fuck didn't they just take it away from him and lock him in his room or tote him off to an asylum? I also find it interesting that no reports of him actually possessing a butcher knife or lundging or attacking with a knife only that he threatened. We have a lot of information not available like where the hell did a retirement home resident obtain a 12in butcher knife, did they even attempt to calm/talk him down? From the reports it sounds like if he actually did obtain a knife he did it while the cops were there so it makes you wonder what the fuck is the real story.

Why not wear the **** helmet then? Seems a simple way to avoid the fine, and it is always a prudent practice. cn

Because its fucking hot in Australia. You sweat enough as it is without a helmet. putting on a helmet while out in the sun, on your bike in that country is like putting a mini oven on your head.
That's the problem with the Police over there who ride on bikes, they're literally hot headed, and no doubt somewhat suffering from sun-stroke, thus their self conduct and ability to "think" turns to shit. Actually that seems to be the case for many of the police over there, even the ones that don't ride on pedal bikes.

Its fine to wear a helmet, but for someone like me who's ridden on a bike for the entirety of my life, its only really needed when the chance that I will fall off and hit my head is high. Like when riding on jumps, downhill, and things like that.

Whenever you are on a bike (be it bicycle or motorcycle), the chance of your taking a spill is nonzero every singe second, downhill etc. or no. When i had either a bike or a bicycle, i always wore my helmet (not the same one but one for each), incl. in places where the law hadn't quite caught up with common sense. It is imo such simple insurance against what is a definitive accident. And let me tell you, Rednekistan is quite as hot&sunny as Oz.
So esp. where there is a law in place, it is simple imprudence andor contempt to ride "bareback". cn

Firstly you got stopped for no helmet, mouthed off, refused to identify yourself, then got locked up. Besides being a totally unavoidable situation, the fine is only $57 AUD.

Very easy to just stop, b/s the cop say your a tourist and wasn't sure if helmets were the law, which is why you had it with you. Apologise and put it on and I guarantee you they would've let you get on your way.

In major cities though, like Sydney, helmet laws are enforced within the CDB because of the huge number of bicyclists and pedestrians sharing the same footpaths (sidewalks). If this incident happened on a major pedestrian bridge, where I know the cops sit every single day, you deserve to get locked up for what can only be described as your own stupidity. It wasn't about the helmet it was about the fact youre a rude arrogant prick.

I don't really watch free to air TV here, not that I cant, I just run a HTPC with over 12TB of storage and anything else can just be streamed via the net. I watch things on my own time, I'm not a slave to network programmers.

And if you think wearing a helmet on a bike in Australia is hot try wearing one in Afghanistan.
