Putting cmh to the test

I've run 860W CDM on LFSW ballasts and mag. They wouldn't even strike on a high frequency digital.

I ran 315W CMH on Philips LFSW ballast, they did great and lasted forever.

I'm very curious about what was done to those lamps that they could now withstand high frequencies?

If it works without longevity problems, I see no reason why it wouldn't be just as efficient as LFSW; it's not like the lamp can dim fast enough between cycles like it does at 60Hz.

Do you have any insights here?

its all about optimize the chemical and physical designs. sometime a litte change make hugh difference.

I dont know any tech details but what I do know is that the bulbs is still firing up and the plants seem happy. They keep bulking up and so while I dont have any tech info I can say they seem to be doing very well. My normal harvest window is in 8 days and if you've read from the start you know I want to take it a bit longer. So harvest is in 8-14 ish days. Things are looking a little more frosty than norm as we expect from cmh

If you are happy enough with the extra frost then you should consider getting a proper CMH ballast.

Not related to the above posts, but I just thought I'd drop by and let you guys know that I've pulled an autoflowering plant just recently that was under a single 315w cmh light along with one other blooming plant, and I pulled just below/just above a quarter pound off of it alone. I will post some bud porn for you guys when I get the chance. :) Definitely impressed with these 315's!

Autos must not be big producers. QP is only 4 onces. I'm not even gonna say how much I pull from 2 315's. Don't feel like argueing about it. It's way more then twice that each though.

Nice, congrats on your success!

I agree with @Blue back that you can get a bit more, but your still in a fair range that most people would be happy with.
I remember several years ago I was running 1kw hps SE bulbs and very happy with a lower ratio than what you got and i was happy with my results.

So long as your happy with it and your not running out between harvests theres no point to change <shrug>

Well, you're more than likely more experienced than me, particularly with 315's because this was the first LEC run I've ever done. But it was also with zero training or topping. Not even LST'ing. Not sure why you'd expect an argument though, I'm sure you do pull better yields than me. :)

I feel good about it only because it was completely without training or interference. In my future grows, I'm going to apply a ScROG and see how much more that produces. I would like to think that with proper training and/or topping, I could double that number, but I don't want to be overly-optimistic either.

I don't grow them, but I understand that topping auto flower strains hurts yield.

Yes, that's the impression that I was also under. I've personally not tried topping autos as I thought it was a big 'no-no', but I'm seeing more and more grows from people who've topped their autos with success. So I've been considering experimenting with it in the upcoming grow. I may try FIM'ing instead of full on topping. My current grow is of White Rhinos, so it will be awhile before I've a chance to experiment with them. Having grown autos the past 5 years, I'm a bit out of my element with these photo's, but I'll get it dialed in.

I've heard autos arnt good to top, but I dont run autos.
I think photos are faster overall and yield better but it takes good organization.i currently run a 315 over my veg area and I have a couple mothers in 5 gallon pots and I take about 12 clones of the strain I'm going to push next around a month or a month and week or so before I want it to goto flower. I have 3 flower areas in winter. During the summer I'll probably only run the single 315 to get me by, I def did my best to stockpile the last several months.
But with those fixtures glued on 12/12 i get a harvest per area every 70 days like clockwork. My last 6 months have probably been my most productive 6 months in my 9 ish years and in a smaller space using less watts than in the past.
Really think that the veg and flower area running photos is hard to come close to running autos

i dont' do anything to my plants except look at them. mother nature knows best.

Yea, "don't top autos", "autos are shit", "autos don't yield much", "grow photos instead"...

Here is topped and transplanted auto, defoliated from above, removed a box of leaves. Day 82.

I will defer to your experience!

Just out of curiosity how many days from seed is that auto? It looks great, very different experience to mine if growing autos. I had some fast buds gg and gsc and between the two tents I got less than half of what I get from one tent with photos. But they looked nothing like that plant you posted. I royally screwed mine up lol. I also had one that got way bigger but was taking so long for flowers to set it got cut down because I needed the room it took up.

Go with better breeders.
Actually I don't like this one, because it takes too long to finish. On picture it's on day 82, I guess around 3 weeks to finish, so 96-103 days. Usually they finish in 80-85 days and in my setup yields around 125-175g dry in 8L coco. This one should be 250-350g dry. I don't mind, but 100 days is too much for me and my perpetual setup (harvest every 52-55 days). I had an auto in 1L pot which was 48g dry. And in 3L pot which was 75g dry. I always top all of them and always transplant them into bigger pots into my flower tent.

What your leaving out is how much light they are under.
Ignoring everything about autos, you have to start from seed every time. Your locked into the expense of seeds.

Ok so I'm at my typical chop date, 70 from flip. I think imma just take 1 plant every day or 2 so I can easily see how this strain does going longer and get it further dialed in. The cmh conversion bulb from @GoBrah seems to have done just fine finishing them off.

My area with a 315 over it is still pretty disappointing, smaller buds than I'm used to seeing at day 35 but we will see what happens in the coming weeks since what matters most to me is the grams per watt right now and I'm trying to get my watts used number down for summer.

As soon as I get my veg plants transplanted I will get a few in the edge of my other 1kw and I'll put the cmh conversion bulb in that fixture so some can start off under it and get a full run in.

After all of the plants that just hit day 70 are done I'll be turning that fixture off for the summer leaving me with 1315 flowering watts. And when the 315 is done about 25 days later I'll turn it off leaving me with 1000 flower watts. Hopefully I'll be able to ride out the remainder of summer that with that running.
