One thing I do everywhere I go is acknowledge people. I've had people say shit, but ya just brush it off. Shit, I remember a dude didn't want me parking in front of his street. Interesting. Long Beach is a cespool. But then it really depends on where in LB. Anything east of 7th Ave. and I can't imagine anyone saying there's anything nice about it. But then you are from Detroit. (totally kidding I had to). But yeah the westside beach/downtown area is super chill. Wealthy even.

Detroit is a trap for poverty. Until the economic opportunities return, Detroit will be hobbled.

But there are good folks down there. Different people doing different things. Trying to make it. The city is cheap, and opportunities are plenty. ETA: if you have resources that is and wanna do something different. Detroit is the second largest city space wise in America. There are some cool areas and people doing different things. For instance, I sold a generator to some recent college grads who grabbed a space (bought on the cheap), who started a custom bike business. Don't know how their doing, but they were doing what they wanted to do.

We saw a Tigers game. Downtown was sketchy AF in some parts. Like I said I'm no stranger to big city urban shenannigans/gang BS....

To me the places I mentioned in Detroit felt different. We went several places in Michigan and mostly it was very chill. The blcok her family lived on and DT did NOT feel chill.

Also, so much of this comes down to chance/luck. I'm sure you haven't had any problems. Most likely you won't. But is the percentage of chance higher in DT Detroit than in Ann Arbor? I would think so.

My uncle got pistol whipped and robbed at a mall in La Jolla,ca (WEALTHY beach area). Can happen anywhere/everywhere. Just more likely in some places.

Do what you want, but on the occasions I venture into the city, I carry more than the latest crime quotes. I'm no worse off being prepared if the prep is not needed.

One thing that really sucks is how out of control blight became. A city should of seen the trend and taken action to stop it. Sure it's limited in scope but other cities in economic down times were smart to hold property owners responsible and seize their property.

I like to try and be rational, and realize these fears are unfounded. More likely to be in a fatal car crash than a victim of violent crime.

Doesn't that all come down to a chicken/egg scenario though? The money just isn't there. For ANYTHING. Even the enforcement of your proposal.

Yes. But if someone smashes into the back of you at a red light theres NOTHING you can do. Complete and total fate and 100% in the hands of the other driver.

If prepared for a worst case scenario there IS something you can do (possibly not always) to change the outcome of a violent situation. Just playing devils advocate. I'm a hippy and wish all guns were flowers instead.

It is. The history of Detroit dating back to the original french fort is fascinating. One of the starting points dates back to the Detroit Riots of 1967. After that, an area which previously had residents began to move to the suburbs. The next major blow was the loss of industry. As globalization took place, good paying jobs, including the big three and the suppliers, began to outsource to cheaper labor productions. It didn't help that during that year major players from Japan and other imports began to enter the market. Poor planning and sales didn't help the big three.

In the 80's, this outsourcing and new competition began to accelerate the decline of Detroit. A city went from 1 2 million people to just under 800,000 in less than three decades.

The city has no decent economic opportunities, that is one of the major challenges

First, I don't like kids and I don't want them. So that's not a concern. Secondly, other things matter such as employment and meeting basic needs (grocery stores are practically non existent). Plus I'm happy in a different county that actually runs well in comparison to Wayne.

Detroit is FABULOUS! We just don't have certain things like, oh, jobs. Or grocery stores. Oh and some folks might want your car, wallet and tennis shoes. Just give them up and the D is GREAT! LOL.

Mock it if you like, but there are some really cool spots in Detroit and people trying to make something out of it. It's not my thing really, but I'm glad people are doing what they do. Things are improving, Meijer opened, Whole Foods (in a yuppie area), and others like Dan Gilbert are trying to make a difference and making money in the process.

easy there. Just jokingly pointing out that you're being a bit contradictory. I've never understood the fierce loyalty to one's city based on the fact that's the geographic location your parents banged in.

I think it would be a large stretch to suggest concern over being robbed in Detroit is unfounded. Yeah, odds are it won't happen today. But it does happen quite often.
