Question on 1st timer room design/setup...

So I'm looking at a space that is roughly 9'9" x 4'10" (8' ceiling) and was wondering what I could achieve with it. The downside to my dimensions is that the space runs with a door and a window at the narrow walls making the space awkward for working "in" the room along with any setup...

Electrical:

It will likely have a dedicated 20a 120v run to it. Basic heavy-duty timers, etc...

Ventilation:

I will likely have a fan and filter (i.e. have access to a 6" 340cfm with a 550cfm 6"x24" filter) and a couple wall-mounted oscillating fans... I *could* access the attic if needed but would rather avoid making that type of modification if possible. I am concerned about noise and the odor... I know how loud the 6" fan can be so I'm also thinking about a muffler and a speed control.

I was thinking passive on any intakes... The area is still waiting for the doorway to be framed in, so I have easy access to put in some type of grille - but the name of the game is for the outside appearances to appear normal in the home and this door appears to be just a plain old closet... I don't want to have vents on 3 sides of it... :?

Another consideration is that I see some cheap options out there for variable speed controllers, but I thought I read somewhere that they use resistors/resistance which translates into heat... I think the thing I was reading was about using a true 'stepper' or something where it modified the voltage... and I think it was around $120 or so for a 'right' speed controller... for the sake of me I can't find that info/controller any more though....:?

Lighting:

Starting with a 4 bulb T5 2-footer and a 6 bulb T5 HO 4-footer. Both have mixed every other bumb grow/bloom at this time... Likely look to add at least another 6 bulb T5 HO 4-footer and possibly make both full of single spectrum (1 full of veg and 1 full of bloom bulbs)... Because of heat concerns, I think I want to try and stay with the T5/CFL type of camp... HID and its fire hazard/heat challenged sounds like more than I want to deal with most likely...

Type of System:

I've gathered most of the equipment needed for a hybrid DWC/Drip-based system - air pumps (2 with 2 outlets, need 3rd), submersible pumps (3), couple choices of tubs, tubing, drip manifold, bubblers, air stones, air check valves - etc. enough for 2 as is or 3 tubs if I pickup a couple more parts. I don't know about the whole recirculating thing and the use of resevoirs with a controller because of it eating up floor space... I did consider interlinking all of my tubs (seperate veg/bloom systems of course) and making them act as 1 resevoir to make managing nutes/topping off/monitoring all that much easier... I'm looking for low maintenance since space will be cramped...

I think my target set of tubs would do well with either 2 big net pots or 4 mediums... though I was told I didn't need big net pots to grow big plants... just better for anchoring perahps (?)...

The 2nd set of tubs I bought are stronger than the 1st ones but they are bigger than I had initially thought about using. They are 18 gallon containers... 22"x26" roughly... they look like those Brutes with the reinforced lid and when full of water showed minimal bowing on the side walls... and they're black with black lids!

For cloning and vegging I intend to do small scale dwc... bubble cloner, etc... I've got the supplies for the tubs/netpots and just need to get a few parts to round that all out and be ready to go from either seed or clone...

Physical Space Layout:

I'd like to have a seperate clone/veg area on 20/4 or 18/6 and then of course a flowering area on 12/12... And I need some strategy for maintaining mother(s). Likely 1 or 2 (or even 3 if I can keep size down and fit 'em)... It is possible I could perhaps manage the clones, small initial veg elsewhere in an alternate space, but if I could keep it all together... that's all the better. There's always that 'other' closet I could modify...

So I'm purely in the theory/planning stages at this point... I've bought some basic supplies, need to buy more obviously... and made some renovations to make it possible...

Now the question for those who've gone before me... What would you setup in this space? I'm open to ideas...

Also, if anyone has any specualtion on - given decent technique / decent plants - what type of yield and frequency could be achieved? Perhaps yield for 'noobie', 'done it a few times' and 'master'... I'm curious as to whether it will even be worth the effort/risks...

The key to any indoor is air circulation along with stealth. You mentioned the door wasn't framed yet, if the walls have not been finished either and you are on the bottom floor with a crawl space under you then how about this idea. cut holes in the floor inside the walls, install screen and cut holes in the wall at the floor level. That exhaust fan wont make as much noise if you hang it in the attic or install with rubber mounting washers.

You are going to have to get to the plants during the grow to prune and treat so I would say leave a foot all the way down on one side for a mini hallway.
I would ditch the veg/mother idea and go with HID, like two 600w lengthwise over a 3x9 table and use the whole room to veg then flower.

That my friend will pull some buds out of that space.

Good old slab here... and this is a 2nd floor gig - so attic would be only option...

As for the lighting... well, would the same wattage of T5 suffice? Just seems the T5/fluro camp doesn't pump out the heat as much... alleviating some of my worries and generally making things a little more managable... though I know there are some tradeoffs due to 'penetration' (sounds like yield/bud density are the 2 biggest factors that are diminished)...

As for not using seperate areas to keep a 'perpetual' harvest going... would the increase in flowering space be able to produce enough bud to 'make it' through another full veg/bloom cycle versus having smaller harvets but continually?

I'm also not sure whether I would be better doing plain old vertical or whether to try scrog... seems like scrog presents some good options but at the expense of some more materials and hassle with having the tub lids/screen coupled together when doing res. changes, etc...

Also... if not using seperate veg/flower areas... you need to take your clones before flowering and upon 1st sexing when coming from seed - right? So to keep the cycle going, you've got to have somewhere to clone and start those guys off until the full-on veg/flower area becomes available... so I'd at least need some nook somewhere to do that... or am I mistaken?

After doing some more reading, I think there's another option I hadn't fully considered... I was reading somewhere this evening that some people take a room and still use a tent inside the room to manage a micro-climate... seperating peripheral space and the actual grow area... I don't want to spend the money if I can avoid it - spent enough already to just be in the planning stages still, but if this presented additional options for cooling/ventilation/odor control - I'd have to consider saving up for the investment...

Wow. doesn't take long to get bumped out of existence from the first page... No one else has any thoughts?

Come on! Help a noobie out! ;-)
