If that is the case, and I said that you were a libertarian then I was correct. The Classic liberal does not believe in no government or necessarily less "obtrusive government". There is a seperate and distinct word for your ideology, and so there is for liberal. You are not a liberal and attaching a modifyer to it such as "classic" does not change the basic meaning.
I think you are confusing libertarian with anarchism.

But we can still play with a different set of words - namely left or right.
Why do you insist on such a narrow, one dimensional view?

"As long as the definition of words is ambiguous and the misuse of words is accepted, there can be no debate" - we agree and as such, once cannot ambiguously claim that one set of words is "the same as far as you are concerned" with another word then missuse of words is accepted.

Liberalism, a political ideology
  • Classical liberalism, a political ideology that advocates free markets, limited government, constitutionalism, rule of law, due process, and individual liberties including freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and others
  • Conservative liberalism, a variant of liberalism, combining liberal values and policies with conservative stances, or, more simply, representing the right-wing of the liberal movement
  • Economic liberalism, the ideological belief in organizing the economy on individualist lines, such that the greatest possible number of economic decisions are made by private individuals and not by collective institutions
  • Social liberalism, the belief that liberalism should include social justice and that the legitimate role of the state includes addressing issues such as unemployment, health care, education, and the expansion of civil rights

Liberal Liberals are people who believe that people should be as free as possible with as little government intervention as possible. They are opposite to conservatives who believe the status quo and stick to old traditions and policies. Liberals are advocates of changes in policies that are meant for the betterment of people. At one point of time, liberals stood for personal liberty more than anything else. Liberalism in politics means standing for the rights and freedom of the individual. Liberals are believed to be standing to the left of the centrist position. If you are a liberal, you can be criticized for being socialistic in leanings.

Libertarian
Libertarian is a political ideology that believes in Live and let live. These people want very little intervention from the state in the affairs of the citizens; so much so that, at times, they are referred to as supporters of anarchism. The word is derived from liberty, and a libertarian is an individual who believes in liberty. Personal freedom is what libertarians believe in though they also believe in social responsibility. A libertarian is dead against any governmental interference in personal or business decisions of citizens. This in turns translates into smaller governments, taxes, and bureaucracy while at the same time signifying greater personal freedom.

I don't know who wrote this but there are some things I agree with and there are some things that I do not. It does not sound like it was written by someone who is objective, however.

Left or right is far more than one dimetional.

I do not confuse libertarianism with anarchism. Libertarianism has the effect of being reactive rather than proactive. Libertarianism holds that there are no rights other than those garnered from goverment (even though it says differently). Liberals hold that individuals are to be offered a level playing field not only against government but against capitalism. Libertarians believe in unfettered capitalism, liberals do not.

I agree with libertarian socialism as a political ideology. It is the only one that matches my views completely. I do not believe in nationalized resources, though It seems to me that the op thinks I am for big government.

The problem in my view is that in American vernacular, libertarian has come to signify-above all-a distaste for all forms of collectivism. I tend to describe libertarianism as anarchistic, but include aristocracy and plutocracy as power consolidators. A consistent anarchist should oppose these.

I feel that collectivism of lower classes is the most effective counter to collectivism of aristocracy (not government intervention). I believe that workers should collectively own (through tradable stock) the means of production that they operate and democratically administer them. I oppose private ownership of finite natural resources such as fresh water, oil and rare earths. I also oppose patent laws. These are the only objections I have of free market doctrine.

However, I see that my political views constitute an unachievable goal as it is simply another corruptible utopia. Aren't they all? I feel that in any system, the richest citizens will have the greatest power to corrupt, followed closely by the state. Therefore I consider New Deal economics to be a superior model to our current system and advocate thusly. All ideologies start, pivot and end based on economic policy.

I think you should do a poll where a contestant/candidate must come to the thread and explain their beliefs and give a clear idea of where they stand on important issues. I'm not going to go through each person's profile and past comments on other threads to get an idea of who they are.

Until someone can start a poll/thread like that I'll just vote for myself, the angry armed liberal I am.
