An American sergeant, identified as Christian Phillip Austin, 37, died this morning after falling with his car in La Guaira precipice of Piedras Blancas, Osa, on Route 2.
A man who found his way to work the car at the bottom of the ravine, about 15 meters deep. Upon reaching the car, he observed a person inside and alerted authorities, who confirmed the death.
Police said the car was traveling on American highway apparently heading toward Canton Brokers.
It appears that the accident occurred early Wednesday.
According to the authorities confirmed, traveling abroad without a seatbelt.
The body was lifted by judicial authorities at about 9:45 a.

Just stumbled into this thread. Read every page and went from super excited to super upset. This is really a sad and tragic story.
guy had everything going for him and now this. what a fuckin bummer
After going over all the information available I believe it was Phillip in that truck.
I'll withhold final judgement until if/when I receive word from his US office (I sent a snail mail in hopes of info).

All info I've seen posted here without a doubt says it was him.
I never really agreed with the way he did things here but then others would say the same about me (probably more so!)
Didn't care for the way he flaunted things but then he helped a few people from here.
Sad part is tragedy seemed to follow him around even with his expensive lifestyle. Younger brother killed in the line of duty defending his country. Now this.
I'm pretty sure he didn't live a real safe life and danger was his thrill. In the end that's more than likely why he's gone.

He is/was a risk taker.
While there we went for a drive some 50 miles into the rainforest and hiked in on a very steep trail for 1/2 mile or so to a series of 100' water falls that had huge trees upended into them. He didn't hesitate to jump into a 30' wide pool from 70 ft numerous time at several different places.
We were offshore trolling one day when he suddenly jumped off of the fly bridge & yelled back "I just want to swim a while" - we trolled around him for a while & got 3 nice 150 plus sails. He was good bait.

An expat has been reported dead after his car crashed off the Inter-American Highway in Piedras Blancas. Police Officers said they found Christian Phillip Austin, 37, early Wednesday morning inside the wrecked Toyota 4Runner. They also said that he had lived in Quepos for several years.
Police also said that the cause of the accident is yet to be determined but Austin's body was still in the car although not secured by a seat belt. The crash is still under investigation.
