It sounds like you may be over thinking your germination =)
New MJ growers are like 'first time parents'. They are so excited about all of the possibilities and potential of their new 'child' they try to control every little facet to perfection to make their little baby all it can be, but it overloads the poor little thing. Just like a child, it's not about trying to get them to do EVERYTHING, it's simply about giving them the right environment to be all they can be and letting them do the rest
My advice is just use some nice quality seed raising mix, 1 gal pot, distilled water.
My super secret that I use for soil is any kind of seaweed liquid product. Seaweed is a fantastic root stimulator and is great at protecting new seedling from pathogens and offers many vitamins to get them up and powering!
If the product dosage says something like 25ml per gal, then mix about 2-3ml per gal (very very light)
Mix up 1 gal of distilled water with 2-3ml of seaweed liquid and pour through the 1gal pot containing the seedling soil mix.
Do not water the pot again for the next 3 weeks! There is more than enough moisture for the seedling for weeks, even when it starts to grow 3-4 inches high. The roots will search out moisture, it will not dry out, seriously
Sow your seed in the middle of the pot 5 mil deep and cover with soft small bit of soil (no chunky bits) and just put it somewhere dark for a day or two.
Overheating the soil and humidity doming/cling wrap would have to be one of the biggest seedling killers. Yes, moisture and heat is required to germinate, but too much will simply open the door wide to pathogens and 'damping off'. So unless it is extremely cold where you are, anything between 65-80F will be fine to germinate.
When it pops up, put it under your CFL, but you shouldn't feel any heat from the bulb on the seedling.
As the first true leaves come out, bring the light closer, but not too much heat
Just watch and let it grow (hands behind back)
After 3 weeks, the pot will look pretty dry and crusty on top, but there is still a little moisture down deep in the pot and the roots should be bursting around everywhere inside. By now the plant should be a few inches high and have a fair bit of growth.
What kind of nutrient you use from there on in is up to you, but you have made it past the seedling stage
Cheers Jimmy
