SOG New Room Setup......additional thoughts or ideas?

Hi all,

I am currently in the process of setting up a new room, homemade tent style (room within a room) and would like others experienced thoughts on what you think and such.

When complete, I will have a 2x4 and panda poly constructed room approx 9.5ft long x 5.5ft deep and approx 7ft high (86-88" actually). So around 47-52sqft depending if I shave .5ft off or not.
It will have 8" legs on one end and 9 and 10" legs on other end to slope for drain. 1/2" plywood as table base with 2x6 sides and then lined with poly. Hole drilled on low end with catch pail or similar underneath.


Lighting will consist of 4 x 600w hps (2 side by side on each end of room) and 1 x 1000w hps in the middle. 3400w total.
I will have approximately 47-52 sq ft footprint of grow space, so about .75w/sqft give or take a little.

All 5 lights have air cooled hoods and I have 2 can fans. 1 can fan will be ducted to cool the 4x600's and 1 will be dedicated specifically for the 1000w. I do have a CO2 burner also but not sure if I can run it without having ac as well. (which I do also have a portable ac unit but would prefer not to use if any way around it, space/logistics wise lol)

Exhaust will be via a window within the room that the tent will be in.
Basically, I will have the window open to the screen and then will plywood over top of the window opening inside the room, and then cut out slots accordingly for the exhaust. Duct from tent over to the window/plywood slot, attach/seal.
Cool air will also be drawn into original room from basement via 1" gap underneath door but I think I will also construct an option slot in the window plywood to accommodate out portable ac unitl should heat become an issue.

Will add a fan or 2 as needed for better airflow and maybe even a small dehumidifier if I find it is needed.

My thoughts are to go with an SOG style grow with approx 100 clones with little to no veg time as if I did do any veg, I would have to do it via the same space/same lights as I do not have another option at this time.

Keeping simple in a supersoil type medium as I do not really want to be bothered with nutes and such.

Thoughts/input, etc on the setup and such?...everything sufficient?
Also would you just fill table with soil and plant clones directly in that way?.......or put all separately in 1 or 2 gallon pots?.....(leaning more towards filling the table but not sure why, lol)
Straight to flower or veg them for a week under the same lighting? (only option at moment if I want to veg)

One other thing that worries me slightly is the 7ft ceilings....after the 18-24" to top of table and the 12-18" of space the lights take up, this only leaves 3.5ft of space (using max measurements) I'm sure it will be fine with little to no veg but still worries me none the less.

With any luck and a bit of hard work I should have completed and up and running in 2 weeks......basic room hopeful to be completed by this weekend!! (hence the reason looking for any input before getting too far along and kicking myself for something, haha)

I'm doing sog with tables and reservoir with hydroton. Very simple and easy. Having super soil in a table with or without pots will be a nightmare . Keep it super simple. All I run for nutes because I'm lazy and don't want to ph is sensi bloom and a little aqua shield or hydroguard that's it. Plants are healthy and it's a dream to run. Change the res once a week to two weeks depending on how much they drink. Save yourself some hassle and look into hydroton. Your going to need a massive reservoir for that size table and will be hard on you especially with soil. Maybe go coco if anything and amend it with some goodies if your set on soil ish conditions. Good luck brother would like to see what you come up with

Use co2 but if you can set your portable ac outside the room and put a duct on the output side and duct it into the room so you don't loose your co2 out of the hose of the portable ac. I did that with a tent and it worked pretty good. If you put it inside also the exhaust will smell like dank because it's using the air inside the room. Just a tip

Love your setup description and will be watching. If I was doing it, I would probably build a flower bed to fit the dimensions. Love the sloped idea.

I will indeed have the portable ac unit located outside the grow area and ducted in.
As for the hydroton and such, I did consider it but decided just to go with the ss for this first go due mainly to the fact that I know exactly how it grows in soil and our local water works perfect for it....I will just be hand watering them a few times a day or as needed.
Thought about going with the 6"square pots as well and then throwing 200 or so plants at 4/sqft but decided to just go with the 2/sqft instead. Got a great deal on 150 - 1gallon round pots and I liked the bit of extra volume provided with them vs the 6" squares so just went with them. Originally wanted to just do the flower bed style as well but though it nbest to stick to pots in the off chance that I have to relocate plants or anything temporarily.

The clones will be coming already rooted but just rooted and pretty small........do you think I am still ok to just flip them straight away or should I veg them 18/6 or 20/4? (would be under my flower lights though as only current option)

Pic of basic footprint/light layout. I had the 1000 already and inherited the 4 x 600's, hence the reason for the different hoods. Construction of tent/room begins tomorrow! Bear with me as may take a bit as I am no carpenter, but am confident I can handle it.......so far, lol!

Lumber - Check
Decking screws - Check
Lights/Ballasts/hoods - Check
2x Can fans - Check
50ft of 6" flex ducting - Check
Clamps and tuct tape - Check
1x AC - Check
1x co2 burner - Check
100+ 1 gallon pots - Check
Large roll of panda poly - Check
2x rolls of metal allround strapping for hanging and attaching in tent - Check
4 bank light/timer.....(1000w will be run on a separate outlet) - Check
Electrician friend on hand to play with breaker box when all is done and ready to ensure safe operation - CHECK!

Then the fun really begins, lol

Thinking I will be dropping the co2 burner addition for now until I see what happens with temps.....also do not believe it will be too efficient/effective in a non sealed room. Will cross bridge again after first crop and monitoring heat/humidity levels without first. Also one less thing with potential to cause problems, lol.

So here we are end of construction day 1, tomorrow will be top structure!



Wondering though......my original plan with the 2 can fans was to have one ducted somehow to all 4 600's and then the other one dedicated to the 1000.



While I was looking at it again today I wasn't so sure that would have worked so I came up with a new thought for it.



Both can fans on one end ducted separately to each of the 2 600's on the end....then ducted to T fittings on both sides of the 1000w...then ducted to the remaining 2 600's and then ducting from each light end to another T and duct out to window vent.



Better idea? Thoughts?

Got busy today and had to run into town for few more pieces of lumber so didn't get a whole lot done but did manage to complete frame
.

Now just to......

-lay plywood
-2x6 rails around for table sides
-hang lights
-lay and wrap poly
-fabricate/install window board to accommodate exhaust/venting
-decide where I am mounting ballasts/attach
-duct everything in
-mount can fans
-ensure electrical is good to go
-get clones
-transplant, fill and place pots
-Flip the switch!

Little ways to go yet but coming along. Will continue work on it sunday or monday.

Loving the set up and pictures so far. Along for the ride bongsmilie

I do SOG in a mix of Coco and Grow Stones GS-2 (they are the smaller size) like a 60/40 mix of gs-2 to coco. I keep clones in a DIY Aero Cloner until roots are at least 5 inches long, the more roots the better, . Then into 1 or 2 gallon pots root pouches (depending on some strains I have) for 0- 21 days of veg and then to flower. Personal best to date was 84 grams per sq/ft on a 4x4 table with 1000w.

Strains I personally like for SOG are all from BC Bud Depot
Kalashnikov (This is the strain that I did my personal best with)

My personal recommendations, again my opinion so take it with a grain a salt and a shot of tequila.
- Do not use soil
- Coco is soilless and is still a pain in the ass sometimes I'd recommend soilless and/or hydro
- Dyna Gro - Foliage Pro and Protekt and done wonders for me at a low cost and is a simple fertilizer that is complete
- Use fabric pots, Check out Root Pouches, they have sizes as small as a half solo cup.
- The Gas Lantern Routine speeds up flower formation when used in Veg (lots to read on this subject)

Wow, 84gr/sq/ft on a 4x4 with 1000 is truly incredible...3lb/16sq/ft or 1.34gr/watt! Thats a thing of beauty to pull and kudos to you! Dialled in that would be 9+lb in my space/setup!....I can only dream, lol. (allthough I believe this to only be possibly attainable with a decent veg time, please correct me if im wrong though!) If vegging the clones for 1-3weeks first basically meant a +/-100% gain then I am sure I would go that route but I guess that is also something I can experiment with along the way.
I like the idea of the root pouches, but not too sure how cost effective they are? I already have my 1gallon pots for this upcoming grow but may look into them for next grow. with the (round) pots I currently have I can fit 135 in the space but as I only grabbed 120 thats what I am going with this first go. Number works easier for calculations as well, haha!

May still yet switch to a coco mix/nutes but not quite sure......couple questions for you with regards to your 4x4.
How many plants did you have in there when you pulled that yield? where in that 0- 21days did you actually veg for? were these done from seed or clone?
Also with how many plants you had in that 4x4 in 1 gallon pots, how often did you water/feed and approx how much water and feed was usually used in each watering/feeding along the way? (I ask this as I want to better figure out how much of the Dyna Gro - Foliage Pro and Protekt nutes/ferts that you speak of that I would need to have on hand or use per 100-120plant crop)
With this first crop due to ease of access and cost of good clones I am 90% sure it will be PK but will find out on other possible options later next week.

Also have amassed a decent collection of seeds (both female only and regs) that I may see if I can find someone that wants to do some mothering/sexing/pheno-hunting for the benefit of us both, haha. Otherwise they just stay as random projects.

And damn you with the mention of this gas lantern routine! lol....first i've heard of it....one more thing to think about for future, read on/research and consume my time, haha.
More pics to come maybe monday after I get lights hung and the table and sides in.

They were clones off a mum that was over a year old in veg. Strain was Kalashnikov from BC Bud Depot's Limited Edition seeds.

I had 4 plants per sq/ft at the time so it totaled 64 one gallon root pouches. I personaly feel "The veg time" can be manipulated to a degree. During that run I had them in an aero cloner for the good part of 4 weeks building massive roots. Peroxide helped with more root mass, and the roots were about 12 inches long and longer when moved to the pouches. I'd have to check my notes but pretty sure it was 18 days of "veg" so to speak.
Again this was a personal best and not something that I have done since, close but not better.

Water usage will be hard to determine. It was flood and drain and I only changed the reservoir once due to a build up of kelp goop that I no longer use in recirculating systems. Maybe that is the missing link to a bigger harvest lol ! In general it was about 4-8 gallons every day or two, it was the middle of summer with 95 degree days so I attribute some water loss to that.

Here is a very basic break down of what I used for the whole flower cycle. I varied it a little as I saw fit but this was the base. Sometimes a little more foliage pro or a little less cali magic but you get the idea.

My personal fidings are as follows. Again grain of salt, shot of tequila.....speaking of which, Cheers ! bongsmilie
Added in this order every time.
Per 4 gallons of RO water
8 ml Protekt
12 ml Foliage Pro
4 ml GH Cali Magic (used every other or every third top off, or as needed)
20 ml BioAg Ful-Power
5 ml Progress Earth Kelp
Came to 420 ppm ( .6 EC ) and an unadjusted ph of 6.0

Notice I did not have to adjust? :wink:

I enjoy growing random seeds. It's nice to play around and enjoy this AWESOME hobby. So much joy and pleasure is had growing the unknown. Anyway the shots are catching up. Looking forward to your progress!

Great, thanks for the info! I plan on using this post as a basic log of sorts, so it's nice to have lots of info to go back and read on when I want to change things up a bit or anything :)

For myself, right now vegging/doing my own clones is not an option currently although I may do a 10-6 or 20-4 for a week or 2 under the same lights but haven't really decided on that yet. I am thinking I will decide on that once I get the clones in hand and see how tall they are/how the root system is doing, etc

I think for this first go around I am just going to stick with a super soil of sorts and will add nutes or teas as required. My main reason for this to start is that I have close friends growing the same strains all in soil so it takes most, if not all the guess work out of feeding.

Future plans down the road may involve flood/drain with table full of coco or coco/mix and nute schedule but depending how this one goes, I may also just setup a drip feed through the plants or flood/drain with table full of soil/no pots. Really it all depends on what happens with this first one, lol.

Managed a little more progress today.....had to do a little "macguyvering" in regards to hood placement as how I originally wanted to place everything, there just was not enough room between the 1000 in the middle and the 600's on the ends, both hood and ducting wise. So as you will see in the pics, what I did was move the 600's closer to edge of tent, then drilled a hole in one side of hood of 600's and then attached to adjustable length chain angling it towards the dead space. (that got opened up by my having to adjust light placement)

All lights fully adjustable, hanging nicely and looking like they should give great coverage!.......this has given me another thought for future grows......putting the 1000 on a rail running right down the middle so the 1000 just goes back and forth from one end to other.
As it stands right now, I wont at all be surprised should the middle section of my tent (where the 1000 is concentrated) out-produce the ends/sides, but also kind of expected I guess, lol.

I think I will be experimenting with the light for a few grows though, lol. Go big and bright right off the bat and if I find down the road that I can achieve same results with half the light on rails then so be it.....that just means I start another room then with the extra equip as by that time I hope to/may have more space

Some more pics/progress......

decided to just run with the one can fan ducted to cool the lights as shown in pic(s)....it will sit on the floor drawing the cool air in bottom of room from outside of tent....there will be a "T" on the other end as well and then ducted to window board to exhaust out (via charcoal filter/scrubber sooner rather than later hopefully!...pending funds). With the other can fan I will either place at top of room to exhaust excess heat (if required/depending on temps, etc) or will just use as an air mover. May or may not throw an additional small fan as well on the window board for better fresh air intake for room but think I may be ok without. Starting to finally look like something!

Almost there! Just need to make window board, connect/duct exhaust to said board along with making an optional hole in it for ac duct. Line table with poly ad it should be good to go! The only thing that may hold me up now is getting the 2 remaining ballasts (I am deciding to just go with 2 new digi's rather than one and the mag that was given to me) which I hope to order by Monday with the hopes they arrive by next weekend. Not really known for doing things half -assed really, but here's hoping it turns out half as good as it looks so far, haha!
