soil additions

hi, i'm new to the forum here and just looking for some feedback. I'm new to growing, but am a farmer by trade so am just wondering about my soil. i've read alot about super soil and soil mixes and nutes etc. i'm just wondering if there is anything i should add to my native soil for an outdoor grow? i was going to add a bale of pro mix hp with myco( for aeration) 20lbs of earthworm castings and another bag of perlite. mix it all up with my native soil and add it to my holes. i have fishbone meal and blood meal but are they neccessary? my soil is sandy loam/loam. i'm growing 5 plants in 1.5'x4' holes(i have an auger, so i want to force the roots deep as opposed to branching out as to have better access to available ground water and increase drought resistance.my logic is the auger with prob polish the sides of the hole a bit and the roots will hopefully head down through the 4' of looser, amended soil.) i've attached a couple soil samples. my main question i guess is does my native soil have adequate nutrients with just the pro mix hp,worm castings and perlite.2016-03-02 17.55.42.png 2016-05-05 22.07.17.png 2016-03-02 17.55.42.png 2016-05-05 22.07.17.png

Sounds like you are on the right track. You could use more compost and more castings and will be golden. I would utilize the fishbone meal, but would leave the blood meal out (but thats just me). If you up your compost/casting ratios then you are fine without the blood meal for sure

Hey thanks. I have access to compost. I have composted grass clippings as well as another pile of composted vegetables /egg shells/ table scraps (no meat). Which is better? And should i mix it and let this all cook for a bit? How much compost as well?

I would mix them together and let it cook for a bit if you can. Both have different "valuables". My mix is something like 40% peat, 20% compost 20% castings & the other 20% is lava rock for drainage. They like soil which drains well and doesn't keep the feet wet.

Ill def give that a go and see how it works out. Will this mix burn seedlings? I was going to fill the hole with the mix then stick a rapid rooter in the centre and germinate in that with a clear bottle over top to retain moisture.

It shouldnt burn them, but I wouldnt germinate in that way. Personally I would germinate first, let it establish itself in the rooter then transplant....Up to you though

I mean just transplant whole rooter in, shouldnt disturb anything that way
