Sometimes bigger really is better.

jump in bro!!! its great just remeber to train yourself to 5.8 ph and mix in lots of perlite!!

i was just like you stuck on soil for indoor.but now i dont think i can go back. i always have to battle with bugs in soil indoor nothing really that bad but switching to coco just makes it one less thing. i must say though that i do miss how forgiving soil is, not that iv had any problems in coco but i just feel like i worry more.

yeah...i will. slowly at first. i have read a lot about it. old habits die hard. my buddy del66666 is always tellin people to jump in. mb i'll do a 12/12 from seed in coco. can't hurt

I would think that in terms of less power used (including cooling fans, A/Cs etc) they would have a quicker pay-off than most would think. MY concern would be yields, and are they equivalent to those from HIDs. Factoring in the cost of HID bulb replacement due to age and light loss, LEDs would be best looked at as an investment in future grows.

thats kinda what iv been counting on, i just really dont know if i can take the plunge just yet. iv never been let down by flouros or hps. but i spend so much time trying to save energy i should just switch to led's at least for veg..
for awhile i was running hps 10 hours and t5's and cfls for 6hrs and that saved me a ton alot but now im doing hps all the time and my bill shot up another 25bucks

From my own experience jack i can only say "we'll see".
I could link you to vids of led grows on youtube but you can do that.
I read some encouraging stuff in Ed Rosenthal's book about led's. About how they are better PAR producers.
And you can't ignore the Kelvin scale charts.
But he also says in the last two wks of your grow you can get more UV from MH than HPS. And UV in flowering is important according to him.

so bigger pot equals bigger plant....this is obvious. i grew and flowered a plant in a shotglass and one in a 7 gallon pot. the seven gallon was rediculous huge and the shotglass was, well....ill post pics:hump:

Holy shit I'm surprised it grew that big in a shot glass that's pretty cool.

yeah im using a cmh for veg and then i have 2 t8 uvb bulbs i run for flowering and im running the cmh bulb for last 2 weeks of flowering also because it has more uvb than a mh or an hps im pretty sure

im on my first uvb grow so i cant say how much of a diffrence it makes yet but i am very hopeful

haha no problem in the case of potency its worth experimenting. ill try to make a new thread this week for my newest grow

I've seen the vids, and have read most of what Ed said about them, but what I've read is out of date material. I'm not so sure I buy ALL of what he says about PAR, like you said, you can't ignore degrees Kelvin. (I majored in Photographic Sciences, and well understand color temp)
As for UVB, it's pretty much proven that exposure to UVB produces more trichomes. Not so much a higher THC level inside the Trich, but the increase of trichs per sq/mm equates into more THC produced by the plant. I can point you to MANY studies on that. MH produces an ungodly amount of UVB, and has a special coating inside the bulb to offset that. If one could get hold of some MH bulbs without that UV filter coat, they'd be IDEAL.
I'm watching any and all grows using LEDs at the moment. I can't remember what they call it, but I'm looking at the big bad boy BlackStar makes (Like $3000 or something) It's supposed to be the equivalent of 1.5 1K lights.

Interesting I did not know about the coating on the bulb, thx for that. I only read that one should remove the glass in the reflector that separates the bulb from the plants. 3 grand is a little too rich for my blood. If I wait three yrs mb it'll come down a bit.
Besides I have to wait till mid November to see results from this led grow before I decide to buy more. I may even switch to led entirely and sell my 1000 watters.

well until led can make a huge inprint and lower its priceing i will always stay mh And hps grower i really really like them results

just starting up my new grow replaced all my white mylr with new, santiized my grow room goin 5000 watts 3 mh and 2 superblue HPS for veg 4 weeks veg period clones are taking 800 ppm already :))
potting this weekend bumping to 1000 i feed every watering 5 -6 day intervel i let them get real dry
when flipping to flower i will add another 5000 watts so total 10,000 watts on C02 @ 1550 ppm i will have mh running on 8 foot tracks so now 5000 watts of MH on tracks and 5000 super blue HPS stationary wooohooo

My bad as hell. It's not the Black Star I'm looking at, it's THIS one by Black Dog: http://www.blackdogled.com/products/bd1300
I'm sure the prices will drop here soon. $2500 is not REALLY in my budget either. Considering I'd be needing 4 of them. I'm also re-thinking the all in one panel Idea, and going with several smaller panels, IF each panel would perform as well as the whole.

Doc, you need to check this bad boy out. The veg footprint is 8x8 and the flower footprint is 5x5. Supposedly it's equal to the output of 1 and a half 1K HPS. (1500w) http://www.blackdogled.com/products/platinum-xl

yea lookin at it but you see the price tag ??? thats nuts for that price you can easily buy 7 - 8000 watts of hid :)) i clicked on the most expensive one also crazy

It's cool as shit. 5W diodes is more than any I've seen. It might even pay for itself in a couple of grows. I'll put it on my wish list.

Oh teah, believe me I've seen the tag. But look at what it does. And look at how technology is exponentially advancing. $2500 really ain't in my budget either. If we weren't getting divorced already, my buying 4 of those would do it too. I am absolutely certain that in a couple of years they'll be a lot more in line reasonable. Will they ever be as inexpensive as HID? Prolly not. Hell, I don't have 1/4 of that in 8 1K and 12 400w lights, not even an 1/8th really. But they DO bear watching. It shows what is possible. Hell, in 3 years, they'll weigh only 2 pounds once the Japanese get a hold of 'em!

Lol...that's funny because it's true. Initial expense is offset by future savings on energy cost. And energy costs are ongoing. As are savings. But I wanna drive home just one thing that I HAVE learned since I started. There's no friggin heat. OMG. it's great. I have a 1000watter running not ten feet from my LED grow and there's a temp dif of 10 degrees between the two areas. So I can't toot my own horn till my kushes are ripe but god dam the leaves are just beautiful. So I'm optimistic.
