Spinosad

I spray every 6 days diluted to the right mix of water and use in a spray bottle and give my girls a really thorough coating.... How does it work? Does it kill on contact or does the plant absorb it and when something tries to eat it, it dies. I'm asking because I mist my plants several times during the day and am wondering if I'm washing the spinosad off. I still haven't seen one butterfly this year but I'm playing it safe. Thanks.

make sure it stays on for a few hours at least before you wash it off. It will kill the bugs from contact but it still takes a little while for them to die.
Isn't that a little often for the spinosad? I notice that when they are in flower it slows them down for several days...sometimes even dries up the pistils.
If you can check them every day, you should consider stretching it out a little...to at least 10 days. or just wait until you see something. :peace:

BTW...some insects will develop a resistance to chemicals after several applications. It is a good idea to change to another product after about 3 sprayings. I use Azamax and Conserve in a rotation.

I'm mainly spraying as a preventative. I thought I had mites but it turned out to be old thrip damage so it's mainly to prevent caterpillars. I think I will either space it out more or just stop all together now as I'm about 5 weeks away and my plants look great. Thanks.

spinosad does not wash off. It is like BT and absored into the plant and must be eaten to kill. Your daily misting is not washing in off.

This is from Cornell Univ.:

"How it works:
Spinosad is a fast-acting, somewhat broad-spectrum material that acts on the insect primarily through ingestion, or by direct contact with a spray droplet or a newly treated surface. It activates the nervous system of the insect, causing loss of muscle control. Continuous activation of motor neurons causes insects to die of exhaustion within 1-2 days. Foliar applications of spinosad are not highly systemic in plants although some movement into leaf tissue has been demonstrated. The addition of a penetrating surfactant increases absorption by tissues and activity on pests that mine leaves (Larson 1997)."

This is from "Naturalyte" (spinosad product)

Coverage notes:
Good coverage of insect feeding
sites is essential as Spinosad is
non-systemic.
Apply min volume of 250L/ha and
increase spray volume as crop
grows. Use nozzles that give
droplets in the size range of 150-
200 microns. High water volumes
definitely help.
Can add wetting agent to improve
coverage.
Ensure spray dries completely before rain.
Repeat applications 7-14 days as new
infestations occur.
Witholding period 3 days in most
cases.

Dow Agroscience says this:

"Spinosad works by contact and by ingestion. Contact occurs either by direct application to the insect or by movement of the insect onto a treated surface. Ingestion occurs as insects feed on treated substrate (such as foliage). While control via contact is highly effective, control via ingestion is 5 - 10 times more effective."

This last quote tells me that if you wash the product off too early, you are not killing the majority that die by ingestion.

never heard of that pesticide. but if it says systemic then its once the insect eats the plant... its its contact insecticide well the its when the insect makes contact.
