Square pots vs. round pots

Hey! So I won't be starting up my grow for another month or so, but I wanted to see what you farmers :) could persuade me on container shape effecting plant growth. I understand square pots cover better area for the roots, however, I was hoping I could find some solid evidence on this! Tried looking around but couldn't find any back to back evidence.

Simply I'd like to know if it's worth buying square pots, as finances aren't lookin too shabby! Thanks in advance!

The square pots allow you to have more plants in your garden. You can determine this with a little basic math. I'm not sure what you mean by better area for roots, but I'm sure someone else will chime in about that.

Thanks for your response, I've got plenty of room so i'm not too worried bout that. Well I heard that people choose square pots because it provided more volume than the round ones, and maybe effects vulnerability to rootbound?

a circle is a square with cut corners so dont cut corners and go with square

do you know why wendy's burgers are square?? because dave thomas doesn't believe in cutting corners.. :D

but to the op, round or square, i haven't really seen any noticeable difference between the two so long as they both hold the same amount of soil.. :D

Yeah. I can't imagine you will find any University studies on the matter. Just pickup cheap black nursery pots..
I use grow bags in flower... 14 cents each for 5 gallon bags, and easily disposed of.

You can reuse them, but really. With the time spent washing out the bags you could find the change in your couch cushions to buy new ones.

With my history with root pests I just want to get the coco and bags out of the room as soon as the plants finish.

working with square containers are much easier in my opinion especially watering and rotating the plant you could label each side if need be

Lol excuse my ignorance but i have never heard people prefering different shapes of pots? IMO it makes no difference at all and you really shouldnt be concerned about what pot shape to buy, i would just pick up any old pot providing its the correct litre. GW

ITS NOT THE SHAPE THATS IMPORTANT,its the size use pots that will give your plants more space for good root mass,i not one for re-potting i just put my new rooted clones into the final pots 10ltr but i use a auto pot system best system on the market old yes but still yet to get a system that will produce more.dont water the whole medium just the medium around the clone so the roots reach the bottom faster.all my growing is a race against time for reasons im sure you will understand why,but i flower for 10 week veg for 3 by this 3 week time there 18 ince with tight internodes.but if the smallest is not 18 ince i will let it get to 18 ince before switching to 12/12 off.like the dude said above square pots just allow you to do more, honest in my opinion i just do 4 sometimes 5 under 2
x 600 hps lights,and get a min of 8/9 of each.

pot shape doesn't matter as far as root....i've pulled almost the same yields with square and round. If you're looking for root space, that's dependent upon the amount of medium you're using ....not the shape of the pot....

..one thing i will say about hydrofarm square white pots ...they have fantastic drainage.. and can be used for both soil and hydro. plenty of drainage holes ...but way more expensive than your average flower pot...

i like my 4 gallon square pots. in addition, i take a vari-bit drill (step-up drill) which is very good for cutting plastic fast, and cut a lot of holes (2") but not too many that would compromise the structural integrity of the pots. then you line the shit with burlap. extra perlite in the soil means more oxygen to the roots. IMO square is better, just because they fit nicely. I got my air pot idea from Grow ideas , hobbes is a well of info and can make your yield % way more.

A 6" Square pot 6" high is 216 cubic inches. A 6" round pot 6" high is 169.64 cubic inches. The square pot has almost 50 more cubic inches of volume. More volume equals more root space/larger root mass, less watering,more/better nutrient availability. All of which contributes to much healthier, stronger, and one could argue faster growing plants. Listen to Nizza. Some type of air pot or fabric grow bags is the way to go. I experimented with them last yr and won't go back to any other type. Root growth was much thicker compared to my regular 5 gal pots and they didn't have as much spinning of the root. I am going to line some milk crates with chicken wire and landscape fabric for some larger square air pots.
