speaking of radishes.... anybody ever grown daikon radish? (the big ones, also called lo bok)

mine are by far the happiest thing in my garden right now, but i'm guessing that they take longer than regular wee radishes?

i saw seeds for watermelon radishes but opted for the daikons instead. they look really cool (i thought it was a package for some obscure strain of watermelon at first).

i got some "comet radish" seeds as a freebie when i ordered some stuff, i put some in but they're still sprouts yet.

So glad I came across this thread. This has been a good read. I've got a small vegetable plot in my backyard and I love seeing how other people do theirs. Great job so far. I'll be sitting watching. Hope you have a great summer.

Here's a few pics I just snapped of the garden. It's been really hot and rainy here the last few days and everything's been growing like crazy, I even had to trim my Cherry Tomato plants because they were getting too overgrown.

I threw in a little Chinese Black Pearl Pepper plant that my wife got from her mother, we're not quite sure what to do with it yet but we'll find some use for it.

Lol, yep, my wife and daughter are Mexican so I guess that counts?

Sure but I expected you to tell me a dozen guys did all that. Not you, your daughter and your wife. I guess you must really love it or you wouldn't do it. Man I miss having a strong back...god bless ya

Just took some more pics of the garden and of some of the fruits and veggies starting.

In the pics are the cucumbers, watermelons, peas, strawberries, lettuce, jalapenos and tomatoes. :mrgreen:

Looking good man. I just started pulling cucumbers off my vine last week. It's almost a daily occurrence now I love it. Your strawberries look delicious. What happened to that row of lettuce? It looks like 3/4 of it is missing.

Some of it didn't come up and I had to replant, the new stuff's catching up fast.

Looks real good, I had to trim mine because they were over growing a couple rows and I didn't pick up any cages for them.

dam 420 whata garden to have. they look so healthy. is it getting to hot in your parts for lettuce now. every one here is now placing shade cloth over them now if they are growing it

The weather's finally starting to cool down here and my lettuce has been doing great, my wife just chopped some of it the other morning.

I'm lucky I have a fence to tie mine too. If it gets much taller I'm going to have to give it a little trim.

That must be why my lettuce isn't growing. It's been really hot here recently. Perhaps it'll pick up this week. It's supposed to cool down. Any Idea if lettuce does well in partial shade? I might move it to a more shaded area of the yard.

it will do better in the shade, i would try to move it to a spot where it gets early morning light ( best for plants) for about 6 hours or more. theri is certain types of lettuce that will tolerate a bit warmer weather as well but i cant think of the name, i think grand rapids is one of them.

and ive been trimming and tying up my maters all year and still got to tie them up again today, i didnt think they would get so big this year

I'm a fellow veggie gardener....

I've got tomatoes, armenian cukes, orange fleshed watermelons, and a few peppers, and one
lonely tomatillo plant. Beans aren't doing too well. Next year I'm going strictly with Chinese Red
Noodle beans.

I'm just surfing here so I haven't read the whole thread but if I may............

Careful about relying too heavily on self harvested seeds. Some of them work, no doubt about that but I've had some big dissapointments with hybred veggy seeds.
Heirloom varieties are much better. Problem is that it can take a long time to find out the fruit doesn't set or whatever and then what? Big waste.
Just sayin..........big fruits start from good seeds no matter whatcher growin

Thanks for the tip. The seeds I'm using are suppose to be all heirloom and I have a large amount and assortment of them to try and grow and collect from the fruits and veggies.

I have roughly 350,000+ seeds (8lbs) and over 40 different varieties.
