Stealth Dresser Grow - 1st Grow Attempt

find you a clear plastic cup or use a baggy and cover the cups to keep humidity in. it will help for the first week or so of their lives
Not questioning your wisdom, but I thought I read somewhere that putting a baggy over them isn't recommended?

By the way, I woke up to use the restroom and found another one sprouted! I have two little sprouts to tend to now!

i have seen many do it, and i have done it. you have a lot of space between your seedling and the top of the cup. what you read may have been referring to the baggy actually sitting on top of the seedlings, causing problems. you dont want your humidity dome resting right on your plant, whatever you use.

Well, I work on average 10 hours a day, I'd hate to come home and find a problem. =\

I plan on possibly getting a small humidifier and new exhaust fan, so if these plants can bare with me for a week..

The room seems to be stable in the following conditions:
4x 5000k 23W CFLs on
2x 2700k 23W CFLs on
Temp: 86F
Humidity: 20%

I've been leaving cups of water in there, but it doesn't seem like it's evaporating fast enough to raise the RH. =\

Ok. They will be fine without it. I wouldn't get a humidifier, plants seem to do fine in low humidity. Its just the first week of their lives they benefit most from it. Humidifiers can cause mold and other problems if run too much.

Good to know, I'll stray away from the humidifier for this first grow and see how it goes.

I definitely intend to replace the exhaust fan though. This current PC fan is surprisingly noisy for moving 74CFM. I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to mount an inline fan, and install a carbon filter.. The issue is that my current exhaust hole is on the door, and the inline fan couldn't mount directly to the door. So, I guess I'll need some sort of ducting that can open with the door. Lol. It'll be a fun implementation.

Edit: After reviewing GB's credentials on his PC thread :-) , I have decided to go ahead and put moist bags over the plants.

Also, just now I noticed that I can see the 3rd sprout, so it looks like everything planted is alive!

are you running them on a computer power supply, or on a power block like a cell phone uses? if you are running them on a cell phone power block or something similar, what voltage and amperage does it say for Power Output? if you already know about this thats cool. but a lot of first timers dont know that fans are rated on a certain voltage and watts. they will work on less voltage and watts, but they will be slower. They will also work on more power, dont know how much may be too much, but their life will be shortened by this.

a bunch of growers i follow on here, and myself, all tried removing any circulation fans and/or intake fans to improve performance. it helped every single one of us. i think what was happening is these fans were mixing the hot air up and not giving the exhaust a chance to remove it, causing the cab heat to build. sorry it didnt help you, but it may give you some thoughts to work with.
I somehow missed this post altogether, but my fans are running on a netgear router power adapter. It's 12V output, and like 5A I think. The fans seem to be running at full speed, but it's just not enough.

And yes, of course I looked up how I was going to power the PC fans beforehand. =P

That's cool with the PC fans. A lot of people just read that they can hook up a cell phone charger! And that works, but it probably won't work optimal.

I am glad my credentials checked out :D I don't blame ya for checking though. I will admint I aint the best grower out there, but I have learned a lot. But I am great at building shit, that I will toot my own horn about :D

A couple of other micro growers you might want to read up on are MatureSmoker, and v12xjs! They had awesome results from small cabinets and PC's.

Riddleme is also a wealth of knowledge, if you haven't found him yet. He has several threads, all with some great information on growing.

As for your seedling I don't do anything just let them grow no need to cover the new plants. As the plants get bigger add more air flow to strengthen the plants as they grow

Oh yeah got my hands on some feminized Pure Skunk #1 seeds from a friend who got them from Super Sativa Seed Club. I place 2 seeds in some tap water last night and will let them soak for 24 hours before planting 1 in rock wool and the other in a jiffy pellet.

Very nice Realstyles, I'll maybe lay some money down for nice seeds after I get the hang of it.
I took a look at your yields, and that's insane! I don't know if I intend on using that many nutes though, I was thinking on just using the Fox Farms Trio for this grow : Big Bloom Grow Big, and Tiger Bloom.

By the way, the temps with the lights off seems to be 72F with 30% Humidity. This is closer to what I'd like to see with the lights on! (75F, 40%) :-\

Temps are still too high for my liking.. This morning I saw it 90F with 16% Humidity.

So, I have gone out to buy (3) Scythe 120mm 110CFM PC Fans: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185060
Not installed yet, but I was wondering.. does anyone have any advice for mounting a carbon filter to a fan?

My issue is that my fans mount on the door, and I don't know how to mount a carbon filter so that the door can still open without swinging a huge filter around.
I've googled around a bunch and haven't found anything interesting that was finished. Stoners apparently never finish anything they start! Lol.

Is your intake and exhaust on the same wall, with intake on the bottom and exhaust on the top? If so, that could be a problem.

Indeed, that is the case.. This dresser had to be 99% stealth, so mounting a fan on the front, or sides wasn't an option..

Oh yes, but you forgot about the bottom!!! I have some pics in my thread how I put my flower cabinet together, intake in bottom and 2 exhaust, one for the cool tube, one for the main cab.

What happens with them on the same wall is the air flows right up the back wall. Or you could use some hose, tube, or other conduit to extend your current intake or exhaust to the front of the cab.

I can give ideas if you want.

I suppose that kind of makes sense, and might actually make sense based on what I'm seeing right now..

I was suspicious that the first light box I made for the exhaust was kind of shitty as it was a first attempt (intake is much cleaner).. So, I removed it.. The intake still has it's lightbox and probably goes about 30% of the depth in. With the exhaust lightbox removed, my temps are at 79F and 25% humidity.

So maybe I was just vacuuming all of my intake right up the door and out like you said.. IF that is the case, do you think when I add a carbon filter on the exhaust it'll help with that issue? My idea of the CF will be mounted on the side wall, with flexible ducting attached to the door/fan, pulling air through the CF on the wall. I think that'll make my exhaust more room positioned rather than on the door, right?

that may help. you basically want to have your exhaust pull the air diagonally across your cab, preferrably at the widest point. Did that make sense?

Yeah, it made perfect sense.. I just went to Home Depot, WalMart, and Office Depot and couldn't find everything I need to make a carbon filter or what I'd consider a proper duct. =\

Smoke break, and time to think. bongsmilie

While I'm taking a smoke break, I thought I'd give some photos of how things are going despite all this ventilation/carbon filter madness.. The sprouts are being champs in dealing with me tearing crap out of their home.

Does this setup kind of look like a V8 to anyone else? Lol

First bloomer, this guy/girl is rockin' on:

Not doing too bad, was the 2nd bloomer:

Third bloomer, (s)he's kind of struggling compared to the others.. I'm not really sure why, I didn't do anything different with this one than the others. =\

Here's kind of an overview shot of what's going on right now, and kind of what I'm thinking for the ventilation:
ALERT: Now would be a good time for me to admit that I'm one of those nerdy stoners.

i like your design, but I do think you should try it with, and without that intake. Another bad side to active intake I forgot to mention, it will force air out of the box before it makes it to the exhaust, and that means all the smell will not make it carbon filter to be cleaned. so you may have some smell leakage. food for thought.
