Strange FIM technique.... anyone heard about this??

ty Grandpa for coming to my defense....lol!!!! I'm pretty sure we cleared that up... it was an honest mistake:) but TY my friend!!!!

Holy node spacing mongo, that's funny thou.
So your saying new growth will emerge from the wounded spot? I know that is bull.

and just for the record Mongo.... the way I understood it was the toothpick would be going straight down into the stem...through the bend.... but who knows...lol!!!

if figure you dont even have to bend the stem just stick it thru like he did, but i agree i would shoot it straight down into the stem vertically maybe a 1/8 of an inch just below the new growth

well, I talked to the guy again today and he confirmed more or less that I had heard him correctly... and he showed me a picture of one of his plants to help me further understand.
He's running all clones now which I wasn't aware of yesterday...and what he did was...when the plant was about a foot tall he bent the top shoot which was about 3 inches from the top node... and at about an inch and a half down he inserted the toothpick about a 1/2" down...vertically right down the stem. He then cut the pick leaving about another half inch exposed. He said the "wound" really created a very large "knuckle" as it healed. Apparently after this the nodes two tops took dominance as if it was topped... BUT he said... and I saw pictures... that the new "knuckle" sprouted 2 new shoots as well... and he said he's gotten as many as 3. So.... It was enough evidence for me to give it a shot on my next grow... I would still prefer that nobody mess with their plants... I will gladly take the risk and start a thread when I do....with pics of course...even though I may become a laughing stock if it fails miserably....lol!!!
anyway.... if nothing else we had a good discussion last night... always enjoy a little rapp session on this great sight~

I forgot to mention one thing even though it's probably obvious.... the original top of course was stunted but came back very strong after a few weeks... ultimately giving his plant 5 tops... havent seen it person mind you.... but saw a very convincing picture, however small on a phone~

dont worry im gonna try this if hes getting more shoots, myqustion this is possible by the way but very difficult this is what im thinking is happening, the tooth pick enters the dead wood effectively blocking fluid transfer, this forces the dead wood to expand(explains the knuckle) this is my theory on the new shoots during the time fluid i blocked it is forced into surrounding cells it insights nodule growth then as dead wood expands fluid resume to the top and now you have some new shoots at the knuckle and the top will continue to grow

major downnside everybody has to think about when doing this toothpick can cause infection

you definitely have a better grasp of what potentially is going on than I do... lol!!! and yes... he said to handle the toothpick with gloves and cut it with sterile scissors... I should have mentioned that:( I'm looking forward to trying it... worse case scenario probably is that it will act like I topped it...lol!!! not the worst thing in the world:)

the best way to get a plant that is bushier than you could ever want with lots of tops and littel extra veg time is to take a clone from a plant in flower...preferably one with a small bud..anyway take the clone and let it veg...the bud grows out a multitude of branches,..I use it when I am wanting a plant I can shape with LST...would be great for starting a scrog as I said you end up with lots and lots of branches...I know that if you split the stem in half the plant will continue to grow 2 almost equal parts...

I really don't see what harm there could be in trying it...I mean what is the difference in cutting off parts to get other parts to grow then bending them over and jabbing them with toothpicks...

exactly you will be good to go. i would soak mine in alcohol for a few min though then let it dry out. thanx for the freind request i know my profile in funny looking maybe one of these days ill add all do hicky and what nots to make it look cool. until then prefer my anonymity jk

nobody disagrees here we are just trying a new topping technique. as i said earlier i prefer LST. with zip ties.

great info missnu.... I plan on getting more involved with clones as I fine tune my "plant library" and find some favorites.... I'll definitely be referring back to your post when the time comes!!! +rep!

you get to keep more leaf vs fim and supercropping well that slows growth alot often times
