I am trying to find a reducer for this so I can use an inline fan. I can't find one that will fit the 3.5" ID of the small pencil cup. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I had ghetto made mine using the pencil cups from Office Depot.

A 6" to 4" reducer from Lowes/Home Depot fit fine. I just duct taped it around, but already fit pretty well without the tape.

This is a great idea that i'm definitely going to use. I also made a make-shift carbon filter using a box fan with a furnace filter w/ activated carbon duct taped to the back of it. These together should eliminate pretty much any skunky smell seeping from my grow room. Thanks for the idea!

So my girls have been giving off their sweet sensual perfume for days now, and I know I should have done this sooner... but here is my DIY carbon filter..

Picked up a few things at walmart.

Black duck-tape
Black "Pencil cup"
Smaller black "Pencil cup"
Black ladies socks (pantyhose)
Activated carbon

Poor some carbon in the mesh like "pencil cup"

.... just enough so the smaller cup is level with the larger cup.

Slip the smaller cup into the sock

Tuck the sock into the smaller cup holding the end of the sock. Pore in the carbon.. keep holding the end of the sock.

Now pull on the end of the sock and use your finger to guide the carbon into the space between both cups until filled.

Now pull the end of the sock over the entire filter.. twist the end of the sock at the bottom and pull it up over the end of the cup.

Now simply use duck-tape to place the filter over your exhaust fan. I used a rubber band to secure it...

Works great... though I already miss that sweet aroma =[

Don't forget to visit the rest of my micro grow for more great Zen style DUI.. link in my sig...

This is the best diy filter that i've used/built. it's lasted me about 4 months and has had about 2-3 ounces filtered through it...it's getting a little weaker, but still working...I plan on changing the carbon soon.

The original design is great, except I had a small problem with the inner pencil holder slipping out and screwing up the carbon layer....to fix this I put 2 opposing screws into the top rim of the container, outside to inside, through the carbon layer...this holds both pencil holders securely in place.

I plan on using this design to build a larger version for a friend, I saw a minnow trap bucket thing at walmart the other day, and it looks like it would work perfect for a larger design...I plan on flattening out the bottom so it has a "cup" shape to it, but I might end up just plugging the bottom "holes" to utilize the extra surface area.

it's similar to this.link.I couldn't find it on walmart's site, might be out of season or something...but most sporting goods stores should have them. If I build this thing anytime soon I'll be sure to post pics.

*edit I use a small pc fan about 40cfm and it works perfectly...for high cfm I'd recommend a larger surface area or thicker carbon layer.

I had to go to office max for the big cup....I also find the center of both and put a bolt through both cups after filled. Seems to keep it together and easier to attach to a 4" exhaust.

what if you dont have a place for the exhaust fan? where do you put it then?
at the end of a duct maybe, you will have to make room it wont work without a fan. I am assuming your growing in a tent if you dont have room then you can at least make the exhaust hole and keep the filter on the outside as long as air pulling through it shouldnt matter if its on the inside or outside,

Well im growing in a cardboard box in my closet. My fan is on its back, blowing up, can I just set it on top of the fan?

the carbon in real carbon filters is placed on vibrating shaker tables to compact the super fine carbon chunks together...it thickens the over all density of the carbon. This is so Air with odorous gasses must travel longer and get the odors screened out into the carbon..
So fish tank activated carbon should not cut the smell. at least not enough to keep you safe during bloom

Has anyone had trouble with attaching 4 inch ducting on either end of this? I wanna have my air run through it and then outside. I'm lucky enough to have a hole in my closet that goes outside to my porch. Helps with heat, but my last grow got really smelly. I'd smell it when I came home from work and parked down the street a bit haha not good.

I have used "activated carbon" from pet departments (Walmart) and pet stores for years. It works so well that I used one in my bedroom to smoke. The air filters into the next room perfectly fresh. ;-)

hey wolf

what are the dimensions of these pencil cups? i went to walmart to get all the stuff and they only had one size of metal pencil holder. so i got a larger one at office depot and will find a smaller one to fit in it. but if you could measure the openings and the heights that would be awesome man.

peace
