yeah I understand that, you don't have to pump much at the beginning but you want a constant oxygen source if your roots will be always submerged in water but once they get big you will want to, with ebb and flow, flood the plants 3 -4 times a day. if you have the roots always submerged in water you just need an air stone and make sure you ppms and ph are good.
I get 4x4x4 rockwool which fits perfectly in the pots which come with the set up except the rockwool and I put a layer a of hydroton at the bottom but that is just personal preference so the roots can come out of the bottom of the rockwool with out it being flat on the pots.
I didn't figure it out either my pops bought me the same one and he had to tell me but my friend figured it out in about a minute.

you would be ok in austin as far as bud goes. it is dubbed the live music capitol of the world and has the largest music festival in the world sxsw. http://sxsw.comTexas would be nice to visit just don't commit a crime there
no not at all but in austin the police over look it because it is so liberal and there is a lot of pot smoking going on with all the music venues and all the music festivals as well as art festivals etc. its like they took a city out of california and dropped it in texas. Austin is filled with musicians, artists, poets, and many other art related stuff. the austin motto is "keep austin weird"
