I've been growing weed for over 4 decades and I don't know who the hell most of the names people are dropping are. And to be honest I don't even care. I've also never heard of most of the strains people are dropping names of. I don't care about that either.

I'd take an old school original Columbian Gold over any of the hyped up famous strains from whoever. Some people think weed just keeps getting better. Some don't. I'm one of those that don't. I think it's somewhat ridiculous the way things are today. The silly names, the cult following of this or that so called breeder that never spent a single day in a classroom learning about Horticulture or plant breeding. You all can have that nonsense.

I agree. I've been growing weed a long time, too. The problem I had for a long time was that I didn't know what I was doing! There wasn't really any literature on the subject except for High Times. And if you were caught reading High Times, then you became suspect. In those days, they sent you to prison for growing weed. You threw handfuls of seeds into the dirt, watered them and waited for something to happen. That was "breeding"!

Landrace strains are (were) where it was at. Each country had its own, special quality of weed. It was distinctive. No one checked THC or CBD or anything. Nobody knew what a trichome was! The weed got you stoned and there was no differentiation between sativa and indica -except for the fact they came from different parts of the world and they had different flavors. Sometimes, you got a good batch. Sometimes you got ditch weed. The ditchweed was low-cost party weed. When you got a good batch, it stunk like a skunk and the smoke tasted like blueberries....or had a rich, caramel taste...or peat moss...or that indescribable flavor and smell that was just pure weed!

Selling weed became a marketing game when the laws changed. When weed became medicinal, people rushed to create a science behind it. I thought it was the funniest thing in the world to see 20-something year old dudes in dreadlocks wearing white, lab coats and talking about how this strain did this and that strain did that...wow :)

Ah well, we older folks are the lucky ones. I guess it doesn't really do any good to make younger people feel bad for missing out.

My brain is full of strains and lineage history. From old school to new. Bit of a hobby of mine.

I know quite a bit about lineage it's just when pollen chuckers started giving themselves and the strains they created silly names and things went cartoonish that I stopped paying attention. Now it's all CrumbleCake JellyRoll Chocolate Purple Haze or some other nonsense. Drops on Instagram, Special releases, Elite Packs, for $50 a seed, etc... I have no interest in following where that goes. :leaf:

Dud you ever grab seeds from heaven's stairway? That was the first legit seedbank I ever ordered from in the early 2000s. They had a fucking killer breeder in seed lineup for back in the day. Pretry sure they got busted at some point though.

Lol, I remember that site, HS was my first online seedbank experience, awesome selection for that time. From what I remember heavens stairway went down along with overgrow, I think it was sometime in 2006. Gotta give props for the overgrow strain guide, it was an amazing source of useful info at that time, definitely saved me lots of time and money.

It also makes some of us middle agers who have just started growing recently feel bad for missing out. Even if I get some seeds with an old school name, I have no clue if it's the real thing or a marketing ploy. It's way too convoluted right now IMO.

Jacks Cleaner, Vortex, Querkle, Jack the Ripper, Agent Orange, Chernobyl, etc.
All of them are famous for a reason.

Yeah I’ve been wanting to grow some again that space queen made some nice tasting crosses. I just remember nobody here in MI seen much purple back then and everyone went crazy when I got an almost black querkle.

Can't say I have. Up until fairly recently I had never bought seeds. In the early days we grew bag seed and then you'd just get cuts from someone and roll with that. Good stuff too. But when I did buy seeds I made some really big orders of all kinds of stuff. Fortunately some of the first I started growing after starting back up were some ACE genetics, PCK, Congo, Panama, and got hooked on the more primal strains. I had hundreds of dollars worth of funny named polyhybrids as well but I only grew a couple of those and gave all the rest away.

I'd say OG18 > Kosher Kush and probably anything else I've ever smoked.. I know it's gone and their replica pales in comparison.

Let’s say I rescued a dog. Don’t matter if I got it from the pound, or relative, or just found it on side of the road.
Soon after, I find out that I like dogs. So I decide to invest in one of those designer dogs. Hell I got me a labradoodle because it seem to be all the rage.
Besides it comes from 2 well known breeds.
A year and $1,500 later, I thought to myself, “hell the pound was filled with “purebred” Labradors and poodles. For $100 adoption fee, I could have gotten one of each and made an entire litter of labradoodles.
Experience has taught me not to chase my tail by investing someones labradoodle, regardless or how they acquired it.
Let’s not forget about that original rescue. He was never fixed so he took advantage of that labradoodle. Wow look at those cute pups. I’m going to keep one and give a few out to the community. 6 months later, they all end back up at the pound. Rescue, labradoodle, pup and all. I get to the pound and there were 4 more pups from the litter already there.
It wasn’t enough just to have experiences. I also had to learn from them.
What I learn most from my experiences, is what not to do.

That's a good point. You're right. The marketing has been going on long enough now, that if you didn't actually live and smoke during the time when those old strains were THE strains, then you'd have no reference to what was what. If there was a way to get back to those old landrace type flavors again, it would almost have to come from someone who is older.

It used to be comparatively easy to identify types of weed back then because there were far fewer of them and almost no hybrids at all. If I had the seeds I used to have and the knowledge to grow them that I have now, then I'd be dangerous! ;)
