Topping Questions

Alright so I've decided to reduce numbers in my tent from 13 to 8. Tent is 4X4.

So I know the plants have enough nodes to do some topping and I also plan on removing the lowest node of growth completely. Is there a specific time in the day or in the watering schedule that i should wait before I top? Basically my plants are at about 3 1/2 weeks from seed. I plan on topping and then letting go another 1 1/2 weeks before I switch to 12/12.

Thanks in advance for all answers.

Ye must wait till the full moon falls on the second sabbath of the month whilst sacraficing a small baby alligator or else the topping will not apease the marijuana gods and you will not only fail but be struck down by the mighty 'BuD'!lol!

No top anytime of the day or night and any time of the water schedule, there is little concern of when to top, unless your a baby alligator!lol! Peace

haha thanks. I'm going to top tomorrow. I'll start by practicing on the small ones i dont plan on keeping to get the hang of it. So I just clip right above the highest fully developed node?

A good time to top is when the third node grows in. Top at the third node. 5 weeks for veg is a really short time for a topped plant. You are going to need about another 2 weeks.

I just topped my clones that i snipped 11 days ago, been in dirt for 5 days and have grown to their fourth node. Anytime is ok really. Unles your clones take forever.

Nice. It might be different with clonning.
I was talking about anytime after the third node from seed. I topped a plant once when it reached its second node (from seed) and it took for ever to grow out. The rest of the plants in the same cycle were topped at least from the third node and bloomed much faster. I think you just need to establish a good amount of fan leaves before topping begins.

Alright well my plants are about 6 nodes high. Gonna top at the 5th node maybe? Will that cause it to get too bushy?

I always like to top a plant at least once. Topping once will not make it too bushy. When you top just make sure the two small collas that are growing out of the nodes have started to grow some.

Oh that was so damn painful. It hurt so bad chopping the little tops off my plants...and then i continued to remove everything on the two lowest nodes of the plant to allow for good air flow down there. So i guess its wait another 1 1/2 to 2 weeks and then switch.

What you have done is remove its apical dominance, means the main stem is no longer the dominant and top growing tip since it can grow no higher.

and then i continued to remove everything on the two lowest nodes of the plant to allow for good air flow down there.
You left the big fan leaves though yer?

So i guess its wait another 1 1/2 to 2 weeks and then switch.
Sounds about right and what i do but i flower short, either way your gona get bud. In the mean time you can pin back or loosely tie any branches that outgrow the others if your aiming for a nice flat top to the plant with equal sized buds. Consider that if one grows 20cm taller than the rest the lower buds will be 20cm futher from the light and recieve less than the top bud 20cm above them. That said dont snap any of the branches in the process.

Also futher to this your plant will still remain apical dominance in one of the remaining branches, the apical dominant branch will grow the fastest and biggest bud and there is normally always one branch that is bigger than the rest when you top, you'll notice it growing faster than the rest or taller. Simply put apical dominance is because growth hormones build up at the growing tip, cut the tip and they build up at the next highest point which recieves the most light too, the fastest and best growing tip builds up the most and is the dominant one over all other branches.

What i wrote dosent mean you have to do squat, just some info for you, try and notice the dominant branch as the plant grows and flowers, i top all my plants and every one has one branch that has bigger buds than the rest allbeit not by much but it is noticable.

Maybe if you can post pics of the topped plants for refernced too dude. Peace

I removed the two lowest nodes at the stem...so no i left nothing of those two...but i also topped at like the 6th node so there is still ALOT of vegitative growth and huge fan leaves left. I just wanted to remove that bottom growth so watering will be easier...haha.
