Topping questions.

So I’m getting ready to top my plants. All are indica dominant hybrids. My first question is what node do you guys usually top at? Then I want to know if I should top before feeding? Before watering, ? Or after one of those? Before the light go out? After they come back on? Thanks for the advice in advance. Oh one more thing. I accidentally turned my timer off yesterday my plants could have missed up to 3 hours of light on a 16/ 8 schedule. Will this affect my plants negatively?

I usually top when 4-5 nodes have grown; I water afterwards. Leave a short stump where you cut, make sure your scissors are sharp and clean. Cut at an angle.

IMO it would be better to cut when lights are on, otherwise you might top urself ;-)

In regards to light schedule I’m not too sure; so far I’ve been strictly outdoors and there the light is pretty consistent unless we have a solar eclipse. Interested in answers though as I’m about to move indoors for my next operation to extend the seasons.

Good luck, let us know how u get on...

Thanks for the reply. I never get traffic when I post in the morning smh. You cut yours at an angle? What’s the significance of that. I’ve only seen people do 90 degree cuts.

If u cut at an angle and water the plant after topping, that water will naturally run off ur cut; I tried both types with 6 plants (cut three straight, three at an angle); the ones cut at an angle recovered quicker. Topping gives you more Colas, but it causes stress to ur girlies; like in real life, the females of the species need to be treated with care ;-)

Don’t cut earlier then 4 nodes, otherwise the shock cut kill the little thing...

U planned on training after the chop?

I take it you not growing Autos? If u are, put the scissors down!

Your timer, 16 on 8 off ,missing 3 hrs of light over 24 hrs won't cause any problems
3 - 5 nodes I top at. You can top any time. Before watering, after watering.
I cut them off with scissors or a blade or simply pull them off with my fingers.

So if I cut at the 4th then the 5th should already be well developed? No they aren’t autos. I do plan to train them but I really wanna flip as soon as it’s recovered. Will it give me a sign?

Soz the stupid question, but what do u mean by „the 4th AND then the 5th?

Me no understand comrade.:?:

U can keep them in veg for as long as I want. If u grow outdoors or in a g-house, as I do, the plant will flower when u get 12 hours day light and 12 hours night time naturally; in my part of the universe this is in September.

indoors: when the plant is big enough, then u change to 12/12 light cycle. Remember that plants will stretch considerably through the first weeks of flowering, so don’t wait until ur room is filled with plant.
Until u change the light cycle, your plants will keep on growing...

sorry I meant in between the 4th and 5th. I’ve already topped and defoliated. I’ll add pictures when I get home. I’m two days into my 12-12 flip and they are already stretching like crazy

This is day 3 of 12-12 schedule. The Mataro Blue responded really well to the topping. The blue og took a little longer to recover but they are catching up now. View attachment 4310838
Kind of a dumb question but how many plants you got there and how long did you veg? Also when you say defoliated do you mean you cut fan leaves shading bud sites or trimmed lower parts? I'm still stuck in a grey area on the whole subject?

4 plants vegged for 6 weeks but that was actually too long should have flipped the week before. Seems like everyone’s definition is different. I Should have said prune.

Don't cut too much off of a young plant or you'll stunt the plant. Ensure it has a dark cycle so it can recovery quickly. Also if you're getting ready to flower, top about a week before. Could do slightly less if it's a sativa strain -- either way make sure it has at least a few days before you're flip. Just my $.02

As soon as I get 4 nodes then the new growth comes off to allow for 4 tops, usually done about week 2 from seed.

Thanks for the feed back. I'm currently on my first grow and struggling with what to trim and not to. ( currently fearful of bud sites not gettting enough light ) I was afraid of jumping in too deep and killing everything without my setup being proven so I just started with 2 plants. They have done well (had deficiencys going on with the right one) and I've started 3 behind them. Do you think it's a bad Idea to try and let my little ones catch up so I can flower all at once ?

I used to cut with a sharp sterile razor blade at the 5th node from seed. Now i simply pinch with my fingernails and do it when plant is young but big enough to not stunt growth. Never had issues this way. Not rocket science lol.
