Unbearable smell when cooking canna butter

clarify your butter or use ghee. This is the trick to making a good butter. Clarified (ghee) butter has a high burn temp and doesn't require water to cook. I clarify my butter, add butter and weed into bowl and cook in over @220 degrees for 1 hr... very little smell, works great.

Water isn’t essential but it does a couple cool things.
first off it is a solvent that helps break down the plant matter and helps absorb the chlorophyll which increases the rate at which the oil you’re using retains the actual resins that hold the thc
second it is a incredibly effective temperature buffer that almost 100% of the time prevents you burning the butter
third It provides a catch all after you strain your liquid. Anything that has snuck it’s way through whatever filter you have used will chill and fall as the oils separate and float

I’ve made literally thousands of batches of different oils (rendered bacon fat is my favorite) and it has never smelled bad or like a sewer. It could be subjective though you might not like the same smells as me.

Also decarbing your weed for more than 30 or 40 minutes can effect the efficacy of your thc. Your not going to ruin it by going an hour but it’s definitely not optimum

I stopped using the water and butter boil method years ago. I agree it's nasty.
Nowadays I just decarb my herb in a glass jar in the oven, and then mix 1.5g - 4g with 1 stick of melted butter, and then strain it through a mesh or cheese cloth.
What temperature did you have the oven at?
how long did you have the jar in the oven for?
Tryna take in all I can by tmrw night lol making brookies Friday

I use a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and I go 225-230 for 30 minutes and shaking the tray every 10 minutes or so

yeh it’s simmering but damn I feel so sick from the smell.. not nice at all.. nothing like the smell of burning weed. I’ve literally never experienced any edibles in my life so thought I’d just make a tray of brownies for tonight with an ounce and see what happens but it’s just the smell.. I can’t even describe it.. it’s just nothing like a “weed” smell I’ve ever smelt
Sometimes, edibles aren't for everyone. I experienced the nausea cooking butter as well. Edibles so make me exorcist puke, and some people love em!

Gooooood luck, goooooo slow. ✌☮✌

In the toaster oven or regular oven at anywhere between 240 degrees F and 270 F, for thirty minutes.

I have been experimenting with lower temps and higher temps between 220 and 300. It seems to me that higher temps result in more of a body and sleep inducing effect (maybe because of thc breaking down into cbn). And lower temps result in more of a head high as if you were smoking a joint.

To get the full spectrum of effects, sometimes I'll decarb an amount of herb at a low temp, and decarb another amount of herb at middle temp, and another part at at higher temp. This seems to really get the full spectrum of effects.

But to make it easy, anywhere around 245 F to 275 F for 30 minutes gets a good effect.

Another option is go lower temp for 1 hour, say 220 F.

If anyone have references or resources that have data on the different decarb temps please share them here!

Also you can use other oils like Earth Balance or extra virgin coconut oil.

Yeah cooking cannabutter smells like shit. One way you can purify it is to melt it multiple times in clean water. The water will take the soluble stuff out of your butter and clarify it and take away some dank from it

I made cannabutter for the first time today. The article I read said to use 1 stick of butter, 5 oz of water and 5 grams of bud. Grind the bud, heat the water and butter and dump the weed in. Simmer for 30 minutes. I really didn't notice any smell, but I've lost a lot of my sense of smell over the years, so really don't know if it smelled or not, but if it was as bad as you're saying, I'm sure I would have smelled it. I'm going to make some sugar cookies tomorrow to try it out.

I don't use MJ in any form, it doesn't really agree with me. However, I'm in the process of slow-cooking some cannabutter to use in cooking for my hubby. I got given around 3.5oz of dry leaf and stem, so thought I'd turn it into something I could use to cook with for hubs. It's been cooking on low for the last few hours and hubs has complained about the smell, so I moved the slow cooker outside. Then I took the lid off to stir it. OMG, I nearly threw up! It smells vile! So, I've had it cooking on high for about 2 hours and low for 3 hours. How much longer do I need to leave it before refrigerating it?

Next time put the oil or butter in a mason jar full of bud, lid on. Put it in a pot of water and boil it in there for 6 to 8 hours.
No smell and strong butter, no decarbing needed before.

Great advice, thank you. Sadly, by the time I got to read it, it was too late. I only had leaf given to me by a relative, hubs would never part with any of his precious buds as they're rather expensive here in Australia, (not legal, damnit!) so I kinda doubled the green leaf component to make up for it. What I ended up with was a dark green, rather smelly, clarified butter. However, today I softened another 500g of regular butter and blended them both together. Smells and looks much better. Hopefully, it will be effective. Making some cookies tomorrow as a test run and they'll either work or not. Time will tell, LOL! Thanks again for the hint.
