So I've been under watering my plants... How much water should 5 gal grow bags with 2' plants be getting at a time?

I usually water till I get a good amount of water coming out the bottom of the pot.

I go with what beuffer said. And if you have ever grown any plant or even seen one grow, it is pretty easy to tell when they are thirsty.

What does it matter what size pot if you have good drainage and good grow medium? When the water comes out the bottom I don't add more, unless I am flushing.

I'm haveing no issue telling when they need water, my time between waterings is not the issue, and as I said in my first post the plants are 2' in height. The problem I noticed is that the bottom 3rd of my bags were dry and the tops were moist, giving my plants stress that is not needed as I just flipped into 12/12. I'm using store bought water, so until water comes out doesn't help much in the sense of purchasing water.

I use 5 gallon smart pots and just flipped over to 12/12. In veg the plants where pretty close to 2' and I would water, take 2 days off then water again. I would use 1 gallon of water per 5 gallon smart pot, that seemed to do the trick. Day 13 of flower I'm noticing the plants looking really droopy so I'm going to water every other day now. The soil is just way too dry taking 2 days off. I do what other posters say and water until I see it come out the bottom and 1 gallon per 5 gallon pot seemed to be the sweet spot.

Roots die when u under water.. causes the pots to stay wet for to long.... never let plants leaves droop that means u have went to long.... soil I'm mostly talking about...

So, having a 5 gallon pot, where the bottom third is dry.... Really not smart... Your plants will never reach full potential... You may as well be growing in a 3.5 gallon pot, with no drain holes, get it? I have made the same mistake you are making, early in my growing life... you are asking for a whole list of problems, heat stress/PH Lock out/cal mag/etc... now, you must water through your plant, with no more excuse to-- how much do I pour on to my plants, this bought water is expensive---BS argument...sorry man, learn to do it the correct way, water it through...GOOD LUCK!!

Yeah, my 5 gallon pot takes up to a gallon of water with just a touch coming out of the bottom. Now this will vary based on how dry I let her get and how I blended the soil (how much perlite). If she takes the entire gallon with none coming out the bottom, I went too long

I use fabric pots and have found that it's really hard to over water, as I have a lot of air movement that drys them out, I water once a week with around 3 gallons. I like a lot of run off to ensure that I have the soil saturated. quit over thinking it, KISS (keep it simple stupid) best thing you can do

Water from the "Bottom UP" Fill your saucer with water, keep filling it until she's done drinking. Dump out any excess water in your tray.
Try that once or twice.

It's in no way the cost that I'm worried about with the water, or I wouldn't be using store bought. I currently do not have a vehicle and I've been transporting all my water by bus or foot. So you can see why I'm looking for an amount to aim for, and this is my first go through. I carried 10 L of water home the other day and had to go out and grab more. It's a lot to move around by foot... Thanks for the input and the rep.

If its ok for you to drink, it should be fine for your plants. Just pH your water if you are concerned, you can also leave it out overnight if you are worried about chlorine, but even that shouldn't really be a problem since at most it will affect the microbes in the top inch or so of soil, and they regenerate really quickly.

My friend if your tap water has a ppm of 300 or less hauling all that water is really not necessary. I grow using tap water at 270ppm and have very good results, when compared to the r/o hanging on the wall...almost exactly the same. Stop working so hard...if you can

I was having issues for no reason even after getting a ph meter and making adjustments. Plus we've had warnings on drinking the tap water in my area in the past (oldest part of the city I live in). I haven't picked up a ppm tester, but since I switched to store bought my plants have not been looking like crap for no reason. Maybe I'll give my tap water a go on one of the clones I have going and see if the same thing happens that did in the past.

The last watering I gave I made sure to pour a little over a liter down the sides of the bag while watering. A few days later I can still feel the moisture in the bottom. I'm going to give the bottom up a try next time I don't feed, to at least get the bottom filled with water.
