I would just add that part of the problem is that the vast majority of people dont pay any attention to actual news or current affairs so the the news outlets started catering to the lowest common denominator with celebrity gossip...and replaced true journalists with pretty talking heads...that would rather talk about the superficial things like fashion and back biting between celebs.
