I vote for soil and at most soil less like Sunshine Mix #4. I used the Sunshine for my first grow and pre amended it with blood meal, bone meal, and some lime and earthworm castings as I remember. Just watered it after that.

If you have a hydro expert on call if you have problems, then maybe try hydro if you want.

go soil. anyone that says hydro is easier for newbs is wrong. soil is a more stable medium and because you have a grow substrate to buffer the plants you have a MUCH larger margin of error. hydro is like playing russian roulette if you are a newb. shit's bound to go wrong.

I guess it depends who you ask. I can't get anything to grow in soil. Hydro is so simple.
Step 1) Get buckets, air stones, air pumps, 6" nettie pot lids, nutes and lights, a germination tent, rapid rooter plugs, and tent warmer, Digital PH tester, PH up and PH down, and a good book on growing weed.
Step 2) Think of the favorite weed you ever smoked and buy those seeds from a reputable seed bank like The Attitude.
Step 3) Add water.
Step 4) Smoke the best weed you ever smoked in your life.

Correct, make sure you know your wall output before you start buying stuff. It's most likely either going to be 120v or 240v. There are adapters available, but why bother if you don't have to?
