What does Chess have to do with Animals?

I've been trying with my son since he was about 5 or 6.

He tried, he learned the rules. He just threw a fit if he lost. We finally got over the pouting when losing but I haven't been able to get him to play chess.

He's a real smart fella, in advanced classes, the HS engineering program, and Upward Bound. I've explained that it's a great mental exercise but he still refuses to play :(
The secret of teaching as I learned in martial arts, is the teacher loses a lot more than he wins. My lawyer friend, taught me how hit where I aimed at darts, by simple keeping even with me, and forcing me to aim small if I want to ever win. And every few games he would let me squeak out a win. I didn't catch on at the time.

The rules of chess, don't really explain the game of chess. At least it didn't to me. That is why I was asking these basic, fun questions. I've played dozens of games in my youth without ever knowing more than taking pieces.

Therefore, I like many, thought the games was about holding on to all pieces, at all costs. To us, a sacrifice was when my opponent saw my mistake of hanging a piece and she took it.

Well, that simple misconception, of not clearing the board with trades as soon as one person gets up as few as 2 pawns, leads to the most boring, Not Chess.

Today on chess.com they will have thousands of games played, with over 11 million members available. And these games are as short as 3 minutes per player total.

And a typical game in my youth went on for 60 - 70 moves before we gave up. We never saw a check mate. We struggled to give check. I think I promoted a pawn, only once.

Did you know it is possible to promote into Checkmate?

Now, my games are over in about 35 moves, one way or another. Chess is not passive. It can be as quick as a knife fight.

ive been playing since the early 70s. i pretty much play every day on line and play with 2 chess clubs..one on friday night and the other on sunday nights, i even get games in during the week at a coffee house.

i enjoy the game and am just a average club player, no way can i make my living from it.

its the cheapest hobby i got, and i never got in trouble over a chess board. here is a pic of a table i had with me in desert storm. View attachment 3335844

No cheating in this game I suspect.

LOL!!!! I remember is was only last year that I finally beat a chess computer on it's lowest setting. I have been just follow the tech of this as usual. And I was trying to see if getting smeared time and again could teach what to do to defend myself. Nope. I only began to understand the game, not just the moves, very recently.
