Yeah they are prob right.... try some free seeds first. I didn't but I"ve been gardening since I was little, read up on it... it's the best thing to do. And it's way too late in season... MJ likes about 40-60% humidity but yes during veg you really don't have to worry too much, I mean always have a place that gets good air flow. You don't want your soil just soggy all the time, it can cause mold and fungus. Too much humidity can make it harder for the plant to uptake water, but it's the flowering stage you really try to control the humidity. I'm in Michigan, not familiar w/ Texas growing.
