Who says LED and CMH can't get along?

With all the debate over which light is better, we thought it would be interesting to document a hybrid CMH/LED grow, as we believe the two light sources can be complimentary – even if CMH isn't as efficient as LED ;)

We were contacted by a grower who wanted to get into LEDs but had already invested in CMH. Originally he had two 315W single end High Par lamps and a 600W HPS in his 4.5' x 4.5' tent and wanted to replace everything with LED. It was a lot of light and a lot of heat – especially in summer. We suggested keeping the CMH lamps and replacing the 600 HPS with a couple of High Red boards running at 240W. He took our advice and put the CMH lamps in each corner and the High Red boards diagonally down the middle for a nice even 1000PPFD across the canopy.

The 3000K CMH lamps already had a nice UVA and near-UV output, so we figured the 2800K High Red boards would add a red spectrum boost while reducing the amount of heat in the tent. Here's what the blended spectrum looks like with the above ratio of 3:1 CMH:LED

I'm hoping to update this grow every week as the guy who owns it is very happy with the results so far. Published here with his permission, here's his grow at two weeks of 12/12.

The strain is an unknown clone, believed to be an Afghan-Skunk cross that yields very well. This is a single plant grow in another hybrid system: run-to-waste perlite and coco. Here's a picture of the drainage pipe exiting the 30-litre pot. These photos don't really do the plant size justice. He's hoping to get 2.5-3lb from this 7-8 week grow.

One week later, and you can see for yourself. This guy knows what he's doing. He's a personal grower, but quite experienced. The hot weather hasn't bothered his plants at all. No aircon, just a fan for circulation.

His last summer grow with the 2x 315W CMH and 1x 600W HPS lamps produced around 2.5lb, due to the heat. This was down from 3+lb at other times of year. It was the heat that prompted the switch to LED. Originally he wanted to grow under LED in the summer and go back to HIDs in winter. But if this system works, he reckons it will stay year-round. Plus it uses almost 400W less without the 600W HPS and ballast.

We can hardly wait to see what his plants look like next week. :weed:

Don’t you have to run temps slightly higher with LEDs as with hps they heat the leaf more?
May not be true, just something I read on another thread.
If it is true then I imagine you can’t fully dial your room in??

I noticed fast that some here think that their way is the only way...
Yeah they certainly aren't trying to hide it. They essentially just want to build an industry around American Cannabis. I get that. Keep money away from China and pay twice the price for US. The problem is how they're going about it. They want to ostricize anyone who makes a reasonable argument against them and I'm not okay with that. If I can produce what they produce at half the cost that makes me more efficient.

My problem is I try to help people regardless of their situation. I use the information presented to me and I try to help them get the best from their situation. I can't even suggest a budget board like Mars for instance without 600 people jumping on and bashing me. Yes it might not be the best light on the market. It's a budget board. It's not supposed to be. But it does give results. I will never argue which light LED, HPS , CMH and so on is the best. They all work great if used correctly. I just don't understand the hate people give for using a certain brand. Pot heads are supposed to be friendly LOL.

Probably get those comments because a cmh is just about as efficient as your mars fixture.
Not trying to be a dick, but if you are after less heat and better efficiency, mars isnt the answer.
Basically, you would be better off choosing a cheaper hid option.

Yes your mars will grow plants. Lots of other lights do the same.
