how can HLG compete with the chinese brands? barring the platitude of "made in the usa", what advantage could they have over their competitors? what will they do with that machinery if this doesn't work out?
Not to sound too much like a fanboy - I've ran their gear literally since 2015. Have 7 year boards still rockin. They manufacture out of Tennessee and another site. They brought back production from mainland china years ago - advantages are many like they listen to grower input - ive tested protoboards for them. They replace defects and constantly upgrade rigs. Plus the DIY benefits

I think the diodes are made in Korea
Not sure about the drivers
As a manufacture of led grow light, I can tell you, most driver are made in China. There are thousands of driver manufacture here^ like inventronics,Meanwell,Sosen, most of them are doing industrial lighting driver before doing the grow light driver...

Only HLG can sell "Quantum Boards". They trademarked the name. So maybe you're using the wrong search terms if you're looking for other boards. Maybe just "LED Board". I don't know.
Quantum board is the patent words for HLG, but most grow light manufature all produce the same thing. This is basic and most popular grow light. Their key words will be like: led grow light, quantum plate, quantum panel, led panel....

Form factor isn’t unique- mono led boards existed before “ white led boards “ hence HLG pretty much breaking ground back then - a progression from COBS . Which they began building and selling under Northern Grow Lights then they began building original QB 304 ( LM561c ) and Nichia. Original boards have hand written Vf numbers on them. Back then you had to try to buy a “ pair “ that was close in numbers.

Form factor is similar to old led mono diode ( epistar and similar ) most of those were shit as single diodes ( ir ) would burn out or entire strings.

The only real advancement in board design will be mixed or custom spectrum boards. Wider spectrum or UV / IR combos even more efficient red / blue panels ( blurple 2.0 )

Lots of people out there like me...like the idea that I can contact customer service and the answer isn't 'ship it back to us in China and we'll send another in 3 weeks.' Also, don't under-estimate the desire for something that's small production and may have greater attention to quality control & detail, especially when dealing with home safety.
