Why are Americans so afraid of Socialism?

This thread is actually pretty good!

I was just looking for something to anchor this vid from Bill Still, about "guaranteed income", onto.
I have had several disagreements with Mr. Still in the past over some of his ideas, but he has come around to seeing "da troof" about money and how there is no need to impose false limits (ala "debt ceilings" or "bond issuance"), although it does require a degree of responsibility in management, which is already a part of the financial structure anyway.

Under socialism, there are no Harvards or Yales. Or if there is a equivalent, it's reserved for the party elite. Under socialism, you don't get what you want, you get what the government says you can have.

I respect Bill Still, he has been commentating on economic matters for many years now and his Money Masters documentary is still one of the finest anywhere if you can get past his constant gesturing.

While a minimum basic income sounds utopian, ultimately it will not solve the problems because there are just too many people who are not responsible.

Ulimately it comes down to killing, looting, and pillaging that will save mankind. Too many of us, our population needs to be culled if the world is expected to survive.

Yah...I can't remember exactly when I saw Money Masters, but it was before YouTube started up. I used to watch WinAmp TV and one morning I saw this "conspiracy" channel that happened to be showing it. Blew my mind, I have to admit, and probably planted the seeds which have led me to the current pursuits I am engaged in.

I don't think the guaranteed income idea is "utopian". All it does is provide a basic floor from which many of the negative externalities imposed by poverty are eliminated.
That alone helps to assuage several problems in society which indirectly saves money.
I suppose it can be considered a shift in spending...
Another approach is the idea suggested by Professor Steve Keen (among others) of the "debt jubilee", which would also have a positive net effect if enacted. But the income base would be more forward-looking especially in light of the technological push (and globalization) causing a literal gutting of necessary labour from developed economies.
I don't know what "responsibility" has to do with it. Could you elaborate?

As for the killing, looting, etc., I've heard others say that as well in application to the US. I don't like that idea, though...it is the solution of Neanderthals and eugenicists.
There are better paths to travel down...

With capitalism you work hard and the fruits of your labor can be used to take care of your family. With socialism you work hard and the fruits of your labor are confiscated and used by the government to take care of themselves and someone elses family.

would you care to comment upon how our society is a unique mix of capitalism and socialism, and how the socialist aspects like medicare and social security are so popular?

perhaps you might like to articulate on what you feel to be "confiscation", which already occurs often in our very capitalist nation. maybe propose a new manner of funding the greatest nation on earth that is not so "confiscatory", and see if the people like it enough to vote for it.
