Why hydro?

Most of my growing has been hydro, years if not decades.Switching to organic and SIPS has been fun and relatively problem free.
I think over time you'll find switching between hydro and soil every few years keeps you on your toes.Like re visiting an old friend.

Doing side by sides is quite fun also.

do you know what Instagram is? He documents his grows
Well, do you know what "vegan" means? It means: "without the use of animal products".

Let me grow you some weed in coco coir with a mineral fertilizer. Totally "vegan" right there. Probably not what Insta-boy has in mind, but let's everybody have their fun.

Like I said his grows are documented so…

Vegan grown is silly, phosphorus from composted animal products is way more sustainable than mined phosphate rock.
Even there you have a problem, because if you get the nitrogen that you need from manure, there will be too much phosporous in the ground, which is bad for the environment. That would be "organic" farming then.

So, going 100% organic would not only be unfeasible because you couldn't feed everybody anymore, it would also be environmentally unfriendly.

Now we have to get the nitrogen from mineral fertilizers, which in turn require fossil fuels to be produced. It's a bitch.

(Don't get me started about "veganism", that is a completely unsustainable life style unless you eradicate 90% of the food-eating population from the planet.)

I’ve never understood the concept of vegan growing.
There is nothing to understand there, the concept is distilled hogwash.
Even when pulled off 100% authentically vegan how is that better than organic?
1. How is, e.g., "hydro grown in rock wool" not 100% vegan in the first place?
2. How is organic better than X?
3. What is "authentic vegan" (as opposed to "not quite so authentic but still vegan, sorta")?

It can. Here's my first grow in a 4x4 tent, flood and drain hydro. This was a test run. Next batch will be 6 plants or more depending on whether or not I can get some patients to cultivate for.
What are you expecting for weight on a system like that? They look really good dude!

Thank you! I bought a pair of 1.5 gallon jars and filled them both to the top. I dont weigh it because its for personal use, that might change if I can get patients, but I am confident I cleared half a pound.

Personal expectations? If my next grow is under a pound I will be disappointed, but its all part of getting consistent results. I am really just excited to grow clones of a single strain (Pineapple Fields) so my results are more consistent and I can get my nutes dialed in.

I don’t know if I’ll weight mine either honestly, same thing, head smoke. I just want to be able to grow enough to not buy it.

So, your hoping to get 1/4 pound from each of the six? I use to grow fruity chronic juice back in the day. I ordered a couple of the green house seed co mix pack disk. I had super lemon, train wreck and a bunch more. I got the FCJ (fruity chronic juice) as a free seed, and it ended up being my favorite. Amazing smell and taste, short flower cycle and super, super, super easy to grow in hydro. I just ordered some of the seeds and can’t wait for my grow after the one I’m going todo next.

I just found out I’m not even growing GG4 like I thought. It’s a glue #4 x zkittlez from homegrown cannabis co. The strain kicked my ass and took over 100 days to finish. I have it in complete dark until tomorrow at noon, that’s 48 hrs. I’m going to take a couple strawberry kush plants this go.

I am hoping for more, but I feel like anything less would likely be from me fucking up the grow, and I would consider that a failure.

That whole grow sounds lovely. I look forward to seeing what you pull, best of luck!

Why hydro?

When I was a kid I read an article on NASA's hydroponic program. Growing food in space and on other planets. The article stated they got 5,000 pounds of tomatoes from one plant. Not sure if it was accurate but it sure made an impression. (I do thing it was true).

As an adult, when I looked into growing, I already knew which way I'd go.

It's cool! Lol. Science, baby! Plus, the idea of handling guano, castings and composting is kind of repellent and stinky. Lol.

By the way, it's domes on Mars forever. We can never create an atmosphere. No terraforming. The Earth has a huge iron/nickle core with a magnetic field that repels solar and cosmic radiation. Mars doesn't. It had an atmosphere but it was boiled away from constant bombardment of radiation. Try it and it gets stripped away again.

You could eventually use the dirt there but it would be under a dome. It is sterile, that's for sure! I think hydro would be the method of choice.

I did good enough last time to use a quarter pound for kief. Hydroton in a low profile RDWC set up. I have two strains, Girl Scout Cookies and Flo OG, my baby. The height difference is a pain.

I have to weigh what I get! I want to say, "I would have spent this much at the medical dispensary". Lol. It doesn't matter unless you want to track how good you do for adjustments. Without the weight metric it wouldn't be as scientific. I love filling the jars. It gives a sense of accomplishment. You made your own meds.

So, I’m setting up the 4x4 tent now. I have to redo all the plumbing on it. 2” x 10’ PVC pipes are 20 dollars here now, fucking ridiculous! The new tent takes up so much room, but has so much more room and is taller. I’m going to run the system for a couple days with bleach in it. I scrubbed the hell out of the system with Clorox and rinsed it out, I just want to run bleach to get it all. I had to put two new holes in the tent for plumbing, I hate doing it lolimage.jpg

so I don’t know what the weight is and probably won’t weight it. I filled all these jars tho and got a shit ton of little shit buds and leafs I’m going to cook down and get butter. The mason jars are expensive as hell here too and hard to find image.jpg

i've switched over from mason to the plastic containers at walmart with a seal that are advertised for dry cereal, pasta, etc. the 1 gallon size.

No problem with the plastic like everyone says? I’ve heard so many reasons not to use plastic but have no idea if any are actually true. Something I keep seeing is it’s made from oil and THC is an oil or something and they don’t bind right or something. I just sucked it up and got all glass.

Just got the machine back together. The hose clamp would not seal the coupler going into the top of the water pump. I had to fuck with it so much to get it to seal. Systems running good and this time I leveled the system so it wasn’t high on the end image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg
