A lot of it depends on your elevation. Here is some info that might help.
I grow at about 2200 feet in northern cal. At this elevation, I can expect my plants to finish 3-4 weeks later than what is "normal." I usually put my plants out at the end of May, and choose strains that finish as early as possible in order to avoid November frosts. I have had much success. I even know a guy who grows in a greenhouse at 5000 feet, with only 4-5 hours per day of direct sunlight.
I am sure that if you read up on the basics, and give your plants some attention, you can have very successful grows where you are at. As I always say, "How hard can it be? Stoners do it all the time."
