hey

i use the paper towel method but i put the damp towel in a seelible air tight plastic sandwich bag keeps it nice an moist... works perfectly for me, gess its every one to there own eh

peace
Hey aggreenvin

I just drop mine in a cup of tap water, put in a dark cab and let pop over night.. usually pop in 24 - 48 hrs. Sorry for your loss man ... that was a pretty plant.....

subbed

+ Rep !

P.S....... what was the screen for? I've heard of LST and seen something called Scrog... don't really know what it is... is that what you have? Pardon the newb questions. I'm still a bit of a newb..... as you saw my journal today... my first grow is surprisingly doing OK.

just bury it in your medium, cover, done. i have had much better success skipping the germ method and just put it in the medium. if it dont grow 2 things could have occured. 1 is the seed was old/bad. the 2nd possibility would be the medium is too wet or too dry. germing works, and most never have a problem with it. but if there ever is a problem you'll be wondering if moving the seed from the paper towel to the medium had something to do with it. but too each their own as it was said before. if it works for you, do it :weed:

Scrog = Screen of Green. Essentially using a screen to train you the plant. Keeps the branches low under the screen so the bud sites grow upward.

you must stay flexible to your grow because it will not flex around you and your schedule.
i am actually totally not in agreement with you at all... i am actually afirm believer that you have to have strict control of your plant... down to the very moment of smoking beggining with seed... the plan may change along the way, but you must be in absolute control regardless... this is my theory in growing... if the plant controls you, then you will have all kinds of issues not limited to space... know what i mean?

I agree with you, but I think I interpreted gumball's comment a bit differently. What I took from it is that you can have all the control over your plant that you want, but it will still throw some amount of normal variability at you. This is where the grower has to adapt to the plant in order to resolve the situation effectively, and I think it's where some of the real artistry comes in.

i hear ya... i guess i misunderstood gumball.. sorry homie... i know what you mean by the unknown variables you speak of... you never know when you will receive a curve ball basically...

no disrespect. of course you want control over it, just like you would want control over your teenage daughter with raging hormones. but when shit goes awry, well you have to make a new plan.

"WHAAAAAT?!??! ANOTHER DAILY UPDATE?!?!?" you say?

"Why yes!" I reply, cheerfully.

Okay... so as my little seed has been doing its thing, I haven't been able to work up the guts to chop its big sister. Over the past couple days since defoliation, not only has the plant stayed perfectly healthy (apparently) but just in the last 24 hours a whole bunch of branches grew probably an inch each and a whole bunch of fan leaves matured -- she could be due for another defoliation session in a few days! Check it out:
IMAG0424.jpg

Look at the affected area of the stem. It is visibly larger, and the infected area appears to be splitting open to make way for new uninfected growth.
IMAG0426.jpg

I think she wants to pull through, guys... I can't chop her now. Let's do this shiet. I'm sorry for flip flopping so much, but this is it. I'm developing good plans for my tent as well, so I'll definitely have a place for this little seed once it sprouts. I went ahead and trained her down under the screen. It was quite difficult and even though I was as gentle and confident as I could be I still managed to damage one branch a little bit right near the base. It doesn't look too bad though; I think it'll be just fine in a few days. The same type of thing happened during my last grow and that branch produced some of my largest buds, so it could actually be a good thing!
IMAG0425.jpg

Numbers:

pH: 5.2 (and rising)
PPM: 900-1100?

I added about 1.25L of full strength flowering nutes today. Hopefully that'll get her on the right track again. Cross your fingers for me and this little girl.

Frankly, I think she deserves a name if she pulls through this. Any ideas?

Very impressive !!!!! I'm not a Hydro man myself..... I like soil.. much more forgiving if you fuc* something up. But I have seen some of the biggiest yields and healthiest plants come out of a hydro grow! I think she will bounce back better than ever !

hey aggreenvin

cant believe how well she's doin with that fu**ed stem who'd a thought it!
im defo with you on this 1 let her carry on an see how she goes if she does fuc* up then youve wasted little time an abit of nutes but if she doesnt an she yields ok then your up!
As long as your propered to lose abit of time an nutes then go for it

Also dude it will be pretty cool to see what happens with the stem....will it heal up fully?......or stay the same?.....or....? should be a good lesson

why dont you call her.... Miss rotty stem lol

good luck bro

No kidding! It still looks weird, but she isn't showing any signs that it's harming her or slowing growth at all. Miss Rotty Stem it is! Haha. I think she'll do very nicely in the end.

Haha, for sure! I laughed when I saw that you replied to that guy in my old thread :-P.

lookin forward to the update ! : )
:-) Sorry it took a bit longer than expected!

Hey did I tell ya that my baby is a female
She's looking great, man! I knew it :).

Well folks, here's some stuff:

These are pictures from a few days ago. This is the most recent picture I have of the stem, but in the 3 days since the photo was taken, it has gotten significantly thicker and more sturdy. More new, healthy growth is apparent each day. Very good!
IMAG0434.jpgIMAG0436.jpgIMAG0435.jpg

And here are some pictures from earlier today, before and after a defoliation session. Yeah, I know the post-defo plant looks super scraggly, but you'll see just how well she's doing from the pre-defo picture and probably a picture in a day or two. The more leaves you take off, the more leaves and branches it spits out at you. Seriously... this girl is a machine. I've done this extensive defoliation like once every two or three days lately, and she's still actively stretching on me. These plants are crazy!
IMAG0443.jpgIMAG0444.jpg

I did a bit of training as well before the second photo and ended up damaging one branch. The tall untrained branch in the back is actually broken fairly cleanly off (mostly off, anyway) about an inch below the top bud. There was a decent-sized chunk of fibrous material still connecting it to the plant, so I made sure stem/stem contact was good and used a bit of clear packaging tape to hold it in place. I'm not holding out too much hope for it, but we'll see how she's doing tomorrow. The good news is the majority of the branch is just fine, so it could act a bit like topping. I'll be interested to see what happens.

More news and pictures after the jump...

Here are the modifications I made to my light/hood. I got a 3.5" hole saw and cut a hole in the end of the hood where the ventilation slits used to be. I also bought a piece of polycarbonate sheeting and cut it to size. I glued it to the light using silicone glue and left about an inch of space near the base of the light for air intake.
IMAG0429.jpg

The next day after the glue had a chance to dry I reinstalled it into the tent and attached my 4" ventilation tubing directly to the hood over the 3.5" hole I cut. In essence, this works as a sort of cool tube. The polycarbonate mitigates much of the heat, and cool air is drawn across the bulb and out the top of the tent through the carbon filter. This change cut the tent's stabilization temperatures by 5-7 degrees Fahrenheit. Now instead of ~90F, it stays at a very manageable 85F or below at plant level.
IMAG0438.jpg

In that picture, you can see I also finished up my reservoir (mostly). I used silicone glue to mount air stones to the bottom, and I installed a water pump with suction cups. I also tied a bit of panty-hose around the water pump so roots don't get caught in the impeller. This should make flushing nutes much easier. The reservoir itself holds about 10 liters when it is filled optimally.
IMAG0439.jpg

Hey! Why does that picture look weird?!? I'll tell you! It's physics! Oh man, I got super excited when I saw this. When I installed the polycarbonate over my light, I didn't realize it at the time but the light coming through it is refracted and therefore polarized. This polarization creates a neat horizontal interference pattern when you use a polarized lens to look at it, such as the lens on my phone's camera. Weee!

Currently there is one Easy Ryder seedling and one LSD seedling in the tent. I haven't included any pictures of those yet because the lid of my reservoir in which these seedlings' net pots are mounted is seriously wonky. I made the mistake of accidentally cutting 2" holes instead of 3" holes for my net pots, and then when I tried to cut 3" holes my drill started flying all over the place and I almost cut off my foot (kidding, no blood was spilled) and the lid that I had worked so hard to cover with duct tape and panda film was pretty messed up. Anyway, I'll get another identical container and re-make the lid soon without failing quite so much. I'll need a similar sized container to pump my reservoir into when I do my flushes anyway!

That's all for tonight, folks. The little seedlings in the tent are looking pretty good. The LSD is doing great (it went from seed to sprout in about 2 days in a rapid rooter plug on a heat mat set at 84F). The Easy Ryder may have gone a bit too long without being transplanted into a reservoir, so I'm not too sure about it. We'll see. It wouldn't be the end of the world if it doesn't pull through, but I'd like to see how it goes with multiple plants in the tent.

See ya'll later!

Oh, P.S. I finally got around to installing the carbon filters on my PC case yesterday. My girlfriend and I walked into my room today after being gone for the night and couldn't smell a thing from the PC! It had been getting pretty stinky hopping into flower, so I'm glad they work well. I'll take a picture of them soon too so you can see how they look on the case.
